Do I need to install a codec pack?

My HTPC is an i7 NUC running Windows 7 Home.

I have installed the Shark007 Codec pack but I was wondering if I really need to.

There is no mention of codec requirements in the Quick Start Guide.

Does Emby install any codecs?

What would I lose if I uninstall Shark007?

It depends on what app you are using.

I think the only thing that would require separate codecs would be EMC (Emby for Media Center) and, in that case, I suggest just installing LAV.

If you use MPC-HC player externally from EMC it has LAV built in and if you have intel HD 4500 or above graphics you can further improve your picture quality with madVR as an external video renderer. All that said, basically all you need is LAV inside the WMC player if you want to go that way.

Yes, I do use Emby for Media Center although I am trying to migrate to Emby Theater.

Thanks ebr. Where do I get LAV and is there anything I need to configure in it?

And thanks to you too Sammy but I have to admit that I understand virtually nothing of what you have written.

What is MPC-HC player and how/why do you use it externally?

What is Intel HD4500 Graphics?  My Intel NUC is NUC5i7RYH which apparently uses Intel Iris Graphics 6100. Is that better than HD4500?

What is MADVR? Where do I get it? How do I configure it?

Sorry for all the nooby questions....
