Who's watching screen

Currently the design of Emby has all apps I have used (with the exclusion of the old Samsung tv app) login users automatically if they were previously logged in to the device.

I think this type of feature has its place, but I'm asking it to be an opt in on particular devices.

For instance, I have an Xbox. Running Emby Theatre in the living room, but it will auto load to my account every time the wife opens the app, where as Netflix will ask 'who is watching'

Could we add an option in the user screen to help solve this issue?

Netflix automatically logs you into your account as well, it just also lets you have multiple users per account. Emby doesn't work this way.

Hi.  All the apps already have this feature.  Just de-select "remember me" either in settings or when logging in.

I've just tested this with an account set 'don't require password on local network' (my normal setup) and I don't have this 'remember me' option

I enforced password on local network, and the option is there that you mentioned.

Could we look at a way to support this feature for accounts allowing no password on local network?

Yes, the option should be in the settings as well.  Which app was this?

I can't se the option in settings, even for the user I setup to use a password. I can only see it on the login screen for the 'password user'

Users who 'don't require a password' will always remember being logged in.

I don't believe having it ticked by default (on the login screen) is the best (and possibly why no password is always remembered)

Could I suggest, for a 'password' user, they have the tick box at the login screen (as they are required to enter a password anyway) but make them tick it, don't tick it for them. (I believe this would solve the issue of 'no password' users always being remembered.

Then for a 'no password' user, make them go into settings to say 'keep me logged into this device' if they wish to stay logged in

Note - I still can't find it in settings so this is a different issue

I e checked using the iOS app, web app, and Emby theatre on Xbox and PC - can't find it on any of them

Who's watching has not been added to any of those apps yet.

I'm not talking about who's watching - just a single user situation

Sometimes I watch one thing, turn off the Xbox etc then later the wife will come along and watch something - adding it to my profile as I was already signed in

I'm suggesting that as users who have no 'local password' are auto signed in, we force them to go into their profile and tick a box to remain signed in if they so desire, rather than just indefinitely keeping one user logged in

As noted above - I can't even see the remember me option for no local password users

Is this something that you guys are working on? I remember having something like this for Windows Mediacenter back in the day and I really like this, as nobody had to mark something in their own profile as watched after having watching this together with other people

While I believe being able to mark multiple people as watching is a good feature, this is not the purpose of this request

Think of it like when you launch Netflix or Disney Plus on your tv or Xbox, they always ask who is watching before launching into content.

Essentially what the above request boiled down to is what I would refer to as a bug in the current design, as multiple devs identified this feature should already be implemented in Emby

The bug is, if users are configured with a password, then an option to 'remember me' allows them to be saved on a device and not have to be logged in each time. If the user does not have a password, or 'allow users to login without password on home network' is ticked, then the user is automatically remembered and remains logged in indefinitely on that device.

Hi. That is not a bug that is a feature as most people don't want to have to enter their credentials every time (especially on a device like a phone).  However, that feature can be disabled, or you can simply switch users after the interface comes up.

What you are asking for is for us to eliminate a convenience feature that many people like when we already have the functionality you are requesting (just in a slightly different way).

I know it's not the purpose of this request, but since @@Luke made the comment, I was curious as I miss that feature and it's easier to just comment here than to create confusion and open a new topic for a simple yes/no question

I agree with @@ebr regarding the original request. I personally do not experience this as a bug, but find this extremely convenient...

I would love a Netflix style thing where I could have multiple sub-users under an account that could be remembered and logged in automatically.

that could be remembered and logged in automatically.

If they are remembered and logged in automatically, how is that any different from what we have now?

Do you have Netflix?

Netflix allows each account to have multiple users, each with their own watch list, viewing history, recommendations, etc. The account is remembered and logged in automatically, and each user has no password. When opening it, you get asked which user you are and you must click on a name.

@@ebr perhaps I have not described the issue correctly above.

I have tested with local passwords, and when a user is forced to enter a password there is a tick box for them to 'remember me' which is ticked by default. Fully agree this is a great convenience for this use case.

The bug as I called it (and a little assuming here) comes when a user is not forced to enter a password. My assumption is as the user does not get the option to 'remember me' in this use case they are automatically remembered.

My suggestion to fix this issue was to add the remember me option to the user preferences screen for non password users - and set user logins that do not require a password to not be automatically remembered by default. If you want to be remembered they can do that on the preference screen.

I don't believe being remembered should be a default in any use case, the tick box is great, but it should be on the user the check it - that of course is up to your design choices.

My issue is that when a user does not have a password set, and I want it to prompt them which profile to use each time they boot up it is automatically logging them into the last used profile. Quite simply, the convenience factor as you called it becomes an inconvenience when multiple people use the same device.

And you can do the exact same thing with us now by just not remembering the user.  You get a login screen with the available users.

I agree.  That is a problem.  That should not be the case with Android TV, Fire TV, Roku or Apple TV as they all give you control of the "remember" option through settings.  We need to have the other apps allow this as well.

But this requires entering a password. The Netflix approach doesn't.

No it doesn't. Just make sure you have various accounts that do not have the "Hide this user from login screens on the local network" tickbox selected in the accounts screen and no users remembered on the shared device. If users have a password set, also make sure you have the option "Do not require a password on the local network" option set which you can find on the password screen.

For security reasons you really want to have passwords set for external access.
