Hi guys new to using emby everyting was moving smoothly with my dvd and 1080 bluray rips. but i put my 4k uhd rips on the server and they just play like a garbles slide show. it plays well on the pc when in vlc. i figure it must be a transcoding problem.

my pc specs are as follows

GPU ATI rx 480 8gb ddr5

CPU amd fx 8350 @ 4ghtz

Memory 16 gb

Hard drives ssd for windows and usb Samsung drive for files

Are those specs good enough for a transcode of 4k hdr content? there 1:1 rips from make mkv. I have tried a few difrent devises all work with 1080 stuff fine.

Samsung 4k uhd player

Fire stick 4k

Windows Edge

Windows Firefox

Windows Chrome

None of them will play the content smoothly

Please help

If it didn't create an ffmpeg log, then it's not transcoding ..  ;)

Looking at the main log - does it say 'directplay Eligible' for the files when you try and play them ?

If it was not transcoding then it sounds like the bitrate is set too high in the app for the network connection to handle.

Try lowering the in-app quality setting.

Save yourself some grief and buy a Nvidia Shield. Transcoding is a WASTE of time and several thousands of dollars only to realize that $150 Nvidia shield makes like 95% of the problems go away. Trust me, I've spent the money on transcoding.

OK orded a new grapics card the gtx 1660 ti and a shield tv hoping that the boost in gpu power will help and the shield wont need to transcode acording to there website so should be good to go

Hi.  Where did you look?

There is a menu button during playback and also a settings screen with various playback settings including this quality setting.

Ok guys the problem is now resolved the shield tv is great plays back superb no jumps stutters or anything. the reason I wanted a new graphics card is the rx480 has no support on board for hevc decoding and I wanted a faster card any way as I was having a few problems with the other.

So big thanks go to bill4sman for the shield recommendation and to the admins for the fast response to my questions.

going to be ripping some 3d blu ray to put on the server hoping everything gos smooth with that
