Specify Audio Device

Is it possible now (or on the road map) to specify which audio device Emby Theater is to use, exclusively? I have looked all throughout the settings and have not seen one. When I activate my Vive, Windows likes to make it my default device meaning I have to change it before I can use ET. While I am also exploring ways to keep SteamVR from changing it and using its own settings, I would think ET would have that option as well.

I believe this can be accomplished through MPV.conf

I don't know the exact details but i do remember seeing a line in one of my previous conf files that pointed to a specific audio device.

I will do all that so i can get it to work, but this has been asked about for 2 years now. Due to that and the last time i Have had an ET update, I have to follow up with off topic question: Is ET development all but dead?

No it isn't, but not everyone needs to customize this and that's why it hasn't been done yet. You can easily handle this with an mpv conf file.

You are right, Luke. Being able to tell which audio device a media player should use is not important. Oh wait. It is!!!!

But it's okay, because i can hunt down some file somewhere and make edits. Then move that file to another location as it will get written over.

I kid you not. I its actually easier to tell SteamVR to set things back to the right way after it closes then it is to tell ET how to handle it's own goddamn data..

What pisses me off is this is a basic feature, but the flippant attitude presented equals "who gives a shit? There is a back-ass-ward way to do it"

I am serious, as a paying customer I HAVE to think conversations go down like this: "ET still cant chose an audio output device, we should do someth--- NO!! The lack of ability to show ratings with a space in it is VASTLY more important than being able hear shit."

I would of thought that would be handled by the windows audio settings app.

I am too frustrated by the lack of updates and things not working properly but since theater is the only current poor alternative to wmc hopefully by the time I have to retire wmc theater will get there but with current progress it is very unlikely as there hasnt been an update in over a year at least.

If you only ever want to use one Audio device, you can. But what you'd have to do is whenever you add a new device, you'd have to make it the default. So that every device is the default. So each time that device was connected/turned on, windows would always use the device you chose. A bit of a pain and can cause problems. Using a specific device in an mpv.conf means that no matter what you do, it will always use the same device. Example: my receiver is what mpv uses, exclusively. So if I plug in headphones and listen to something in another app, while that's playing, mpv will still output audio through my receiver. What this ensures is that if windows does something screwy and changes the system default device, mpv/Theater will be unaffected, and will always work, correctly. This is why I do this.

TBH, I’d never heard of mpv.conf until reading this thread.

I understand this might be irritating ,and frustrating for some users... but, if it’s the only alternative at the moment to solve the topic of this thread, then use it. Don’t carry on and abuse because a more convenient option is not available. Eventually, the devs may to decide to offer a setting in the app... it just depends on the amount of people who actually want this feature, and like the original post. Heck... I’ll even like it, even though I don’t use Windows anymore. Just because I think it is a good idea.

As always, Emby can keep half-assing it, I will keep pointing it out. And while all your points are valid, the total duck-tape style of development that Emby embraces (and let's not kid ourselves, being able to select a freaking output device for a media player is development 101 type crap) as is evident by leaving out something as basic as this FOR 2 YEARS. I am sorry, when I see a pile of crap, I will point it out to those responsible for cleaning it up. Also, I do not care what else is going on around it, the absence of this for 2 years, is a CLEAR indication that development is truly dead for ET (at least in its current state) and any updates that are currently foreseen for the future are just to keep the duct tape stuck and not advance the software. Because, if that was the case and and advances and features are actively being developed but NOT the ability to select an output source... that speaks more clearly than developers even put out a media player that cant select the output source to begin with.

Yeah, I understand the frustration. That's why I try to fill the gap as best I can. mpv is capable of so much and I try to help people get what they want.

Absolutely it works, and it is awesome. And I can understand it being announced and used.... but the time for an actual option to be there is long past is all. This is one of those things that makes a product unacceptable to sell. And this is one of those features that is totally unlocked with $$$, the ability to play in ET, not just browse. Yet, you cant tell it where to play to, specifically.

There have been a number of suggestions and requests, over time. Maybe we could be more helpful, and create a concise list of what we all would like? There is a feature request thread, but I feel that some of the things that have been asked for in Theater, aren't so much features as they are tweaks/improvements. Part of the problem is that there are too many options already in Theater that only a few might use. Example: The scaling options. The people that seem to care about that want to use madVR, anyway. And do! I'm an advanced mpv user, and I don't use them. There are some options still in the UI that mpv has removed, such as video-stereo-mode (3D). It all needs to be tightened up.

Thoughts?

What do you think are the top ones?

Definitely should remove video-stereo-mode (3D conversion), as it no longer has a function. Pretty much get rid of everything below that.

@@daedalus and I have repeatedly asked for hwdec=no to be left open, so it doesn't block the use of hwdec in the mpv.conf.

For audio, I do agree there should be an option to choose the device. We use to have it. It was and is, a good option.

Audio exclusive mode needs to be fixed. We reported that, recently.

Closed captioning needs to be added.

Obviously the issue with the window when refresh rate switching needs to be addressed.

Add mpv logging.

I'm sure there are others, but that's off the top of my head.

What is the difference between closed captioning and subtitles?
