I keep getting "Error - Unable to establish connection with the server" when trying to configure MBT.

My set up is as follows:

Server - MBS installed; Windows 8.1; connected to LAN via ethernet to 802.11ac bridge

HTPC - MBT installed; Windows 8.1; connected to LAN via ethernet to 802.11ac bridge

Both Server and HTPC are connected via 802.11ac to a Netgear R6300 router.  The Netgear R6300 is configured as an access point sitting behind 2Wire DSL modem/router (in other words LAN-to-LAN connection).

I have the Server and HTPC on the same Homegroup with everything being shared.  When using File Explorer on the HTPC I have no trouble manually accessing and playing media files located on the Server.

I have tried both entering the IP address of the Server as well as the Server's network name together with port "8096" but MBT keeps giving the connection error.

Any help appreciated.

turn off windows firewall on both systems to see if they're causing the problem (or other firewall software you may have installed).

Also, you may want to make sure the "Everyone" user is listed as full access users for your media

And, do you have your libraries setup as UNC paths rather than local paths?

for example //computername/movies instead of E:/Movies

Thanks. Found the problem.  Per usual, just me being stupid.  I did not have the MBS app configured to auto start.  I incorrectly assumed that MBT could initially connect to the running MBS background service.  When I started MBS manually and reran the MBT set up it connected.  Seems to work now.

I am noticing tearing of the video as some other users have reported.  Have also noticed that some DV video files (captured VHS tapes) are failing to play properly (suddenly stopping).
