Video Playback Freezing After 2-5 Seconds

This started about 3 weeks ago with some media, and now it is happening with almost all playback.

I will start the playback, the video will play for 2-5 seconds, and then it will freeze. The audio will continue to play.

If i skip forward in the show, the audio moves to that time properly, however, the video remains frozen.

I am able to play media properly through the web interface as well as through VLC externally.

I thought it might be a codec issue, but I haven't had to deal with one of those in years, and the fact that it plays in VLC as well as its expanding to other media makes me think it is something else.

Suggestions?

Now some content is not showing any video at all, just audio with a black screen. I'm having to resort to VLC for over 50% of media now.

I just started experiencing this as well.

With both WDTV boxes, this is happening, and with various other computers on the local network via the web app it just refuses to play at all.

Not much to add to the conversation yet though, I am just getting started looking into it.

What are your pc specs? Is it a local streaming (server and client on same computer) or you use wired/wireless connection?

Local (server and client are on the same machine. Media is on an unRAID server in another room.) It's totally inconsistent. It does not appear to be a streaming problem (I can jump into the browser and watch it fine). I've been using VLC outside of Theater for about 60% of my content over the past month because of this reason.

It is not behaving like a buffering problem at all.

Oops i should have gave more info, from evr+ to MadVr.

edit -- after more experimenting i discovered evr+ works fine as lone as you have subtitles off, as soon as you click the CC button and select a subtitle, it freezes or goes back to Emby, MadVr seems to playback fine.

This makes sense, but i didn't put it together with subtitles. Most of the media that I've noticed locking up has indeed had subs on by default.

I'm heading to work now, but I'll try to figure out how to change the video renderer when I get home and report back after some testing.

Thanks mystic.bertie..!!!

I've been going mental trying to get video playback sorted.

Mkv video playback was choppy.

Nothing seemed to help, then I saw you posted turn off subtitles & use evr+ = video issue sorted.

Cross the subtitles bridge another day.

Bump. This is STILL happening with Subtitles causing freezes. Can we get some support on this?

Can you provide server and transcode log if present.

So I tried playing the same video twice, that should be the last two play's showing up in the log. There was no transcode file in the log dir.

2nd to last one is with madVR. I get audio but no picture. Shortly after I exit playback and go back to the main menu, Emby.Theater crashes. I'm left with Electron still running and have to End Task.

Last one is with evr+, I start playing then turn on subtitles. It continues to play for a bit, then the picture freezes (but audio continues) at the 2:52 mark, the same point every time. The audio stopped after around 3:25. I can skip around to get audio in different places but the picture remains frozen.
