So I have tried everything I can think of to get this to work. I have uninstalled Emby on all my devices, reinstalled them and still get the same error of "unable to connect to server please make sure Emby is running." I have the server on a Windows 7 machine, I have tried with the firewall on and firewall off and still no success. Below is my log. Thanks, Thomas

Is your network set to "home" or "public"? Do you have anything watching the network, like antimalware/antivirus software? Disabling windows firewall isnt necessary, it should pop a dialog you allow an exemption for emby with. If you dont see this dialog it is probably the network connection type not set to "home".

Speechles, I checked my connection and it comes up as a home network. I do not have an antimalware/antivirus on the computer that is the server. I checked the firewall settings before disabling it and it had mediashare allowed for two separate lines, but I checked to see if it was a windows problem.

I have not had a problem with Emby until about a couple weeks ago when it was doing update after update and it wasn't restarting the server. I checked the startup folder and there are two Emby files, one was called Emby Server and the other was Mediashare server, I removed the mediashare server file. I also did any and all updates that were outstanding. I rebooted a number of times to ensure all updates were done. The Roku, Android, and Iphone can see my computers name, but cant connect to it. When I click on the name of my computer it will sit there and think for about 30-45 seconds then it will say it cant connect. I have a feeling it has to do with the main server computer but I am at a lose of what to do next. Thanks, Thomas

I did all this last night, with no success, just did it again and again no success.

Hi, this part is important

Hi, can you please go through our Connectivity Troubleshooter and let us know how far into it you get before running into a problem? Thanks.

Luke, I did exactly what you said, I followed each step. I tried connecting to the site through google chrome by using the http:// address provided when you open the dashboard. I turned the wifi off on my Samsung Note 3 at attempted to access the server outside of the network. I was using AVG for a virus scan but I just downloaded Nortons 30 free trial and trying that as we speak. Port forwarding I have open on my router but Charter prevents it, I also have the firewall on my computer to allow any port 80XX to gain access to my network.

Ok, but I'm still looking to find out what step didn't work.

Luke, my results from the Norton scan came back with a couple tracking cookies and "Trojan" viruses from crack software.

He's not thinking aloud.  Knowing exactly which step failed helps narrow down the issue.

If you cannot connect in any way then that points to a basic network configuration issue.

Did you disable upnp on the router?

Erb, if you look at the 5th post you will see I stated I did all this and it still failed.

Yes you did, and thank you for doing that. We're looking for more specific information. For instance, we asked what steps in the troubleshooter worked, and at what point did in the process did it stop working. For example - the early part of the document asks you to do a simple test to connect to localhost. Are you saying that this failed too? According to your first post it sounds like this part is working, but you said I did all this and it still failed - so it's hard for me to tell if you actually went through the document and did what it asked you to do.

Luke, I have tried the local host in-network connection, I have done this on my Roku 3, Iphone 6, and Android Note 3. I have tried the internal connection on my Iphone 6, Android Note 3, Toshiba Windows 7 Laptop. I have open up the TCP port 80 in windows firewall, I have also disabled windows firewall, and still no success. I have ran an Anti Virus scan with Norton's Premium Service with the most up-to date definitions, and it found some tracking cookies and 2 Trojan virus that we for hacked games. I have turned both my Iphone 6 and Android Note 3 Wifi off and tried to connect to the remote access web address through 4G LTE one with Sprint and the other with ATT. I have setup port forwarding for ports 8000 - 9000 on my Net Gear WNDR4500V2. I have also since Speechles said to try it, I have turned off the Upnp. None of this have worked, I will type the address in and it states in every single try that it cant connect to the server to please make sure it is running. When I try to connect of Wifi on 4G LTE is times out and states it cant find it. Again I will repeat at no time does it connect at any step doing any part on any device that I have available.

I have open up the TCP port 80 in windows firewall,

Emby server does not run on port 80.  Have you allowed the ports it does use (shown on the dashboard front and defaulting to 8096/8920) for the application through your firewall?

Yes because we've often seen that disabling windows firewall causes more trouble than it solves. the wiki link above mentions that.

Well I figured out what the problem was, when I would goto the local dashboard it would tell me the local address was 5.206.80.206, I would try this address and it would fail. I installed emby on my laptop and the local address was the IP address for that laptop. So I tried the IP address for my main server and it worked. The address I was displayed on the emby dashboard is still wrong but it works now.

Happy2Play

Well done, that is an external ip address, are you running a vpn on your main server computer?

Happy2Play, I am not running VPN on this computer. Have no clue how this IP Address came about. How would one create a VPN without knowing it by chance? Would/could windows do it? I know I have not set one up.

So after Happy2Play stated that the IP address was a VPN, I started to wonder how this would be installed on my computer without my knowledge, so I went to google. I found that Net Gear on some of their router implement a ready share NAS, which they install a Leaf Network Adapter, which when you go into device manager you will see it has the IP address that Emby Dash Board states. I have had this router for almost a year now and now it decided to create this problem. You are about to disable the Leaf Network Adapter and at this moment I have not seen any connection issue with it yet. Also, once you disable this Leaf Network Adapter Emby will display the correct IP Address to connect to.
