Emby/Roku remote access success story

I have both Emby and Plex on my Roku and they both feed from the same media folders on my Synology NAS.  I have both because I’ve found there are media files that Plex has problems with that Emby can play without issue.  While on vacation recently, I learned of another plus for Emby…  We were at the beach and I had taken a spare Roku with us in case we wanted to watch a movie or something stored on the media server at home.  Just connect the Roku to the TV and use the in-house wifi.  No problem except that I could not connect remotely to the Plex server at home.  I typically access Plex remotely via https://plex.mydomain.com.  I have a reverse proxy on the home router that routes that specific URL to the NAS where Plex is installed.  While trying to get this to work through the Roku while out of state, I found that I could not connect to my NAS and that the manual setup for Plex only accepted an IP address, not a URL.  Game stopper.  Couldn’t use Plex.  Switching over to Emby however was a breeze and I was able to enter the required URL (https://emby.mydomain.com) into the Emby setup and everything worked without issue.  I don’t know why we don’t routinely use Emby.  Instead we have only use it when Plex has an issue which is more and more frequent as I begin to store different file types or in this case need access in a different environment. I  guess I need to rethink this.

I was thinking that at the second sentence.  😛
