Thank you. As I have already installed Emby again, do I need to uninstall/clean cache/cp/reinstall again?  Or can I simply stop Emby, cp and restart Emby?

Try starting from the copy line and see what happens.

As long as you don't delete/modify your original DSM 6 install you can retry this.

Thanks, I didn't write those instructions but copied them from another user posting in the forum that others said worked.

I'll setup a DSM 6 VM, install Emby on it and then perform the upgrade following all directions to verify.

Thanks a lot!

The thread I linked to has these instructions in it.

Instructions for upgrade from dsm6 to dsm7 (beta!!!) with keeping library:

- make sure, you have dsm6 and dsm7 Emby (beta) package for same version. At post creation it was: 4.6.0.35

Link for lastest versions from first post: https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby.Releases/releases

- update Emby to 4.6.0.35 dsm6 package
- start Emby and check if update went good
- stop Emby
- goto Emby share clean cache, logs, transcoding-temp (with filestation)
- uninstall Emby

- update DSM to v7

- install Emby 4.6.0.35 (dsm7 version)
- stop Emby
- remove emby_pkg user and video group

- enable ssh in Synology settings
- connect with Putty to Synology, login with admin user and get root rights with: sudo -i
- copy files from old Emby share to new data location: cp -r /volume1/Emby /volume1/@appdata/EmbyServer
- adjust owner from copied files: chown -R emby:emby /volume1/@appdata/EmbyServer
- close putty

- add emby user and emby group to your shared media folder in Synology
- start Emby

Emby should work fine now with old library/users.

As last step, you can remove the old Emby share.

I'm confused on the following part?  What Am I supposed to share with?  I see the  following folders within the Emby folder........Cache, logs and transcoding-temp folders....what should I do with them....?

- goto Emby share clean cache, logs, transcoding-temp (with filestation)

I have tried with below command (without uninstall/reinstall again).   I was asked for password and then can see the view history / playlists / favorites, etc.

cp -r /volume1/Emby/* /volume1/@appdata/EmbyServer

However, all the libraries under My Media are now missing.    Anything I have missed?

I'm running through the previous instructions and making adjustments as needed on Synology VM at present.

I'll post revised instructions as soon as I'm done.

Sorry after waiting a while, the libraries appear.    However, for every library there are two copies.   When I deleted one of them, the other one is removed too.

Attached is a quick video I made of upgrading DSM 6 to DSM 7 with Emby Updates.

I had instructions off to the left but the screen capture program only recorded the browser.  So you won't see me downloading or PUTTY/SSH commands but everything done in browser is recorded.

I converted this to MKV/H.265 to make it small enough to upload.
Let me know if this helps or if you think I missed any crucial steps.

DMS7 Upgrade for Emby.mkv

Instructions used were:

Download and have ready DSM 7 package for update.
https://www.synology.com/en-us/DSM70 (I will be downloading both a virtualDSM 7 & for 920+)

Download and have ready Emby Server 4.6.3 for both DSM 6 & DSM 7
https://emby.media/download.html

- update Emby Server to 4.6.3 (or latest release)
- restart Emby Server and verify your on 4.6.3
- uninstall Emby

- update DSM to v7

- install Emby 4.6.3 (or same version that was running above (dsm7 version)
- stop Emby
- remove emby_pkg user and video group
- enable admin account if needed
- give read/write permissions to your login ID and add Emby

- enable ssh in Synology settings (Terminal & SNMP menu)

Not shown in video:
- connect with Putty to Synology, login with admin user and get root rights with: sudo -i

- copy files from old Emby share to new data location:
cp -r /volume1/Emby/* /volume1/@appdata/EmbyServer

- adjust owner from copied files:
chown -R emby:emby /volume1/@appdata/EmbyServer
- close putty

Shown again in video:
- From Control Panel go to Shared Folder and edit each share that is used by Emby Server.  Click the share, then EDIT, go to permission tab, select internal system user from drop down,
grant emby user read/write access.
- add emby user and emby group to your shared media folder in Synology
- start Emby

Hmm... package not working from Emby

The version of DSM i download from Synology for my DS418 : 7.0-41890

The error message : This package requires DSM 7.0-40000(update o) or older.

So... no Emby running anymore on my NAS.. damn !

And i'm a Emby premier user !

When I go and hit the run and then open on the Emby icon, it then goes back to run after a few seconds...I am unable to enter Emby...

That file name looks like the DSM 6 version of Emby Server, not the DSM 7 version.  Please make sure you download the DSM 7 version.

All of them.  I got the very end when it was time to open Emby up.  Everything seemed to have worked besides actually opening the app

Can I not just move my media to an external drive

update DSM 6 to DSM 7 on my 918+

Reformat the Synology Raid drives

Move my media back and have Emby index again?

Will there be a future Emby update to make a DSM 7 install more automatic?  Upgrade to DSM7 and then just update Emby.

insted of cp -r /volume1/Emby/* /volume1/@appdata/EmbyServer

i used this

  • mv -R /volume1/@appdata/EmbyServer /volume1/@appdata/EmbyServerbackup
  • mv -R /volume1/Emby /volume1/@appdata/EmbyServer

@sybold

yes, this also works in the end. but this way, you create a backup of the new (unused) emby-files instead of the emby-files of your old installation.

therefore i would recommend using the copy-cmd already posted: in case anything goes wrong, you still have a copy of your emby-config. and if everything works, you can just delete the old emby-share.

Brilliant guide.

THIS NEEDS TO BE A STICKY AT TOP OF SYNOLOGY SECTION SO PEOPLE DON'T WASTE HOURS!

External access by nginx reverse proxy all kept too after doing the instructions.

I used WinSCP app (free) to copy the files from old Emby to @appdata/EmbyServer and then run the owner permissions change command line from the command prompt icon in WinSCP.

I only give Emby internal system user READ on my Multimedia share though where my media libraries are and not READ/WRITE (I still use XML metadata not NFO in there)

Now to delete the old Emby area that Emby has no access to, and has started successfully using new area.

THANK YOU FOR THIS GUIDE 'CAYARS', MUCH APPRECIATED....

Thank you for the step by step and video cayers.  Indeed a pin for this guide would be good.

I have just completed the DSM 6 to 7 update and used your guide for Emby. All went well, I was concerned and had originally planned to leave the DSM upgrade alone for a couple of months.

I took the plunge this afternoon after testing the upgrade on a virtual dsm setup.

One thing I would say is to add a note mentioning that uninstalling emby (whilst in DSM6) will not erase your config settings as I thought may be the case. After testing in virtual DSM was happy to proceed.

Happy to also report all my virtual machines are intact. (I did backup all my data first!)

Thanks again. :)

Yes it kept my Emby metadata, fonts, config folders etc. after I uninstalled Emby 4.6.3 (for DSM 6.x). Just copied to new location after install and set ownership as described in cayars guide above.
