As long as they don't go Amazon Fire UI which is bloody awful if you just want your own apps.

Personally I've been quite happy with any dumb TV and a MiBox-S in front of it.
This of course is for anything soundbar or less audio wise.

It's gonna be just like the Chromecast, I suspect.

Knew this had to be coming.  Note the subtext on that article... lol

As long as we can put the interface into App-Only mode, like you can with the Chromecast with Google TV, it'll be OK.

There's too much clutter otherwise.

Looking for a budget TV. Going to Hisense over FireTV for exactly what @cayarssaid..

For me Smart TVs are not smart enough, therefore this is a great idea.

I think replacement home screen apps are going to start getting more and more popular on Amazon and Android boxes.
I was thinking of doing a replacement on the FireStick 4K this weekend.

The ATV Launcher looks good - haven't tried it though.

May have to sideload it though.

For a low budget Backyard Patio TV it seems a TV with AndroidTV built in is the cheapest and simplest way to go. That said, I do have a plethora of MiBox s' on hand.. Seven at last count. Maybe a dumb TV will be the best solution after all if I can find one on the cheap.

In that case, just get the best TV for the money and ignore if it's "smart" or not.  It's actually getting harder and harder to purchase a dumb TV.  That gives you the option to test/play with the built in features or just slap one of your MiBox's on it and call it a day. That's pretty much the approach I go with.

Why? MiBox supports AC3 and DTS, which might not be enough for high-end users but for an average user it should be quite enough.

I should have said "doesn't have a hi-end audio system".

You are correct it's fine for 5.1 or lower.

You get used to it, it's not too intrusive.  Been on the mibox about a month now.

What do you think?

Not as good as the original UI, which you can make very minimalist.

Haven't got a choice 😀

I've had it on my Chromecast with Google TV device since I bought a few months back - there's too much clutter on the screen.

Just had this new UI appear on my 2015 Shield.

So, did we lose our custom home screen channels on the Shield now?

No, but I still have them turned off.

Some unhappy people on the Shield forums talking about removing ads, etc.  Still haven't seen it on mine

removing ads

What ads?

Not seen anything other than suggested content from Apple TV and Netflix, which I don't have installed, as well as Amazon Prime and iPlayer.

That could be it.  Not a whole lot of details, just a bunch of stuff like "plz remove the $&#^$ ads".  I think most of the first 15 threads are all complaining.

I did see something about you can install another launcher though, so I may check into that.
