When does Emby choose Dolby Vision over HDR

This may be vague, and I'm sorry if it is. I recently ripped the 4K BluRay of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Super large files, but awesome quality nonetheless. Anyway... When I play them in Emby, the first two movies show HDR, but Return of the King (last movie) Dolby Vision shows up when playing back. (Shield Pro is the client) I'm not sure if anyone can answer the question... but truly curious as to what Emby needs to see in order to play Dolby Vision?

Loaded question. :)

But basically a simple answer.  Emby needs a client that is capable of playing back Dolby Vision.
So in a nutshell the HDMI chain needs to support it from client to hardware.

Well crap... I accidentally posted the original question from my fiance's account. Is it possible to delete that post and start over? I don't see an option for deleting the topic???

And as a side note... the client is the same. It's been a shield pro playing all the movies. HDR for one and DV for the other.

No need, we know you have an alternate personality now. LOL
It's fine, no need to adjust anything.

Can you go over what you may perceive as an issue in specifics?
I'm a little bit unsure of exactly what might be a problem.

HAHA... my alter ego. She's my better half for sure... but she watches more movies than I do lol

Basically here's the issue. I have movies that I copied directly from the 4K Blu Ray of the Lord of the Rings. 2 of the movies play in HDR. One plays in DV. For the life of me I can't understand why one does DV while the other is DV when I did exactly the same things for all 3 movies. Just strange. The quality looks great on all 3 in Emby... it's just crazy to me the reasoning etc.

This DV thing.

Am wondering, did you try restarting any of the movies ? I think I've seen occasions when the DV logo pops up on the screen erratically and might need a few goes to get it to work.

Mind you, I have a Shield Pro playing to a Sony TV that apparently only does profile 5 DV and most 4K rips are apparently profile 7, so the TV shouldn't play them, but apparently the Shield does play profile 7. Hence I've seen the TV pop up the DV logo, but is it actually playing the movie in DV or did it just get a signal saying DV but it just does HDR and I can't tell the difference. Course this doesn't matter if you haven't got a Sony TV.

I've tried restarting multiple times. I've tried on a new Sony as well as on my LG. Both show DV for the movie. Honestly like I said both pictures look great. It would be awesome if there was a way in Emby to see if it was playing DV/HDR etc. That goes to some of what I've said in the past. I'd love to see Emby show a few more details like Plex does on what's being played etc. Bandwidth being used etc etc. But that's a whole conversation for another forum/post. In regards to this, who knows why. I don't know if it's just the signal being received, or if it's actually being played in DV. I doubt there's even a way to check that really.

Weird. I guess you used the same version of MakeMKV or whatever to rip them ?

You could see if there are any differences with MediaInfo, if it would make any difference.

I did use the same version of MakeMKV. Finished one right after the other. I know it's strange for sure.

Any difference between Theatrical and Extended ?

I could try what happens on my copies, fairly soon(ish).

They're both Extended. Wonder if I should try theatrical... may not be worth going through the hassle again haha

Okay, I'll give it a go, at least for curiosities sake, somewhat later today.

(not to watch, but to see if the DV logo comes up in the beginning).

Hi.  And you are positive that all the movies actually are in DV, correct...?

Yes, when I put the discs in to my 4k blu-ray player, they all show up as DV.

I believe @ebr is referring to the rips .. ;)

The best tool  to identify DV is MediaInfo - if the 'HDR' section says :-

Dolby Vision, Version 1.0, dvhe.07.06, BL+EL+RPU, Blu-ray compatible / SMPTE ST 2086, HDR10 compatible

Then it's DV single layer - and should be playable with emby.

If it says - SMPTE ST 2086, HDR10 compatible (only) and there is a 2nd Video track (also saying SMPTE ST 2086, HDR10 compatible) then whilst this is a DV 'rip' it is not playable on any software based player - thus you need to convert it to a single layer.  You can actually do this by running it back though the latest version of MakeMKV.  ie use the dual layer MKV as the source of the rip - and the new version should be a single layer.

I hope that helps.

Hmm - interesting - that 'should' play DV on the Shield just fine.

Are the MediaInfo settings identical  to the one that does play ok ?

Yup 100% identical. Isn't that strange for sure? I can't figure it out. It really isn't the biggest of deals, but something that's "quirky"

I finally got round to having a go with LOTR. Just the first minute of all six, 3 theatrical and 3 extended. They all showed Dolby Vision on the TV and Dolby Atmos on the sound bar. I think The Two Towers Theatrical only showed DV on the second attempt. They were all done using MakeMKV 1.15.4.

Are you using the 'HTTP' or 'File' method on the Shield Pro ?

Sometimes when I try a 4K DV remux, it uses HTTP even though I have set it to use File.  So it's a little inconsistent - but if I stop and play it again - it then uses File.

It's no big deal so I haven't bothered to report it - but is anybody else seeing this ?

That could happen if the attempt to access directly fails.

Thanks Eric - yes I think it's something to do with the 'wake up' time or 'network browser' access - as it's only ever the first time I use it does it seem to fail back to HTTP.    Every retry after that on the same file or any other file works just fine using File access.   Both methods work fine, so it really is a minor point. ;)

Interestingly enough today all played in DV with no changes. The whole thing is strange. Either way thanks for all the ideas and suggestions.
