Fresh Emby install, music library not working correct

Hey everyone got an issue that's popped up

Few weeks ago i started to have issues with my Truenas (jails in particular) and a number of plugins not working correctly, refusing to start or restart or connect and other issues, Emby would just stop midway through watching movies or episodes of TV series and give network errors sometimes wouldn't restart even after i asked it to, even re starting Truenas or any other plug in would sometimes fail and do nothing. It all pointed to jail issues. Anyway after a fresh install of Truenas, re add pools, samba shares and a freshly created iocage and so on i got to work installing Emby from the Truenas plugins page.

All went well, i set up the mount points on Emby and created my first user, added my premium code and got to re creating my media libraries. It's all gone well, movies, tv series, documentaries and other things show up fine in their respected libraries until i reach music. I created the music library and left it to scan overnight as there is just over 250gb of music and it would take a while to re scan everything in. Wake up this morning to find out the library doesn't look right and something is up. I did a second rescan and it just flashes for a moment then nothing as if to say nothing new found or changed. Here are two screenshots i took.

First one - Half the albums show blank cover, incorrect album or incorrect artist
Second one - No artists showing up

the way i have my music on the server is as followed like the examples below

audio/Artists/A Flock of Seagulls/Studio/Albums/1982 - A Flock Of Seagulls/ 03 - I Ran.ogg

audio/Artists/Queen/Studio/Remastered, re release, boxsets/A Night At The Opera (Remastered Deluxe Edition)/CD1/Love of my Life.ogg

audio/Artists/David Bowie/Bootlegs/Live/1971/1971 - Aylesbury friars club/ 09 - Changes.ogg

audio/Soundtracks/Control (Joy Division)/05 - Dead Souls Joy Division.ogg

audio/Artists/Wanda Jackson/Compilations/The Essential Recordings/CD 1/let's Have a Party.ogg

audio/Comedy/Jasper Carrott/Studio/Rabbitts On and On and On/08 magic roundabout.ogg

Using Emby before this fault the audio showed up correctly as i spent months using music brains picard, easytag, asunder CD ripper to get all my audio ripped, cleaned up, converted to ogg, tagged and made sure every last detail was correct from album name, track listing, album covers and so fourth. And it all showed up fine with no faults and my library looked incredible. Is there an issue with my Emby install, has Emby left any files over from the last install in the audio folder that's causing the issue or something else?

I am running Emby - 4.5.4.0 and tried updating via shell but it just tells me i am up to date with packages.?

You go to Logs in the Dashboard and download the log which contains entries from the times of the even that occurred. Next you may edit out personal information using 'Find and  Replace ALL' in notepad.. and then add as an attachment here in the forum to a post.

Someone will take a look at the logs to check for errors and problems.. To make sure there is not something obvious and gather more information about the issue.

Result i think?

Few weeks ago i helped a mate set up his first Truenas server and we got Emby installed, all went well and he started adding Movies & TV series, but once it come to playing anything video based it would throw up a compatible stream error. A day or so on various forum posts and trailing through google and i came up with the error and a solution.

Error - FFMPEG wasn't installed when Emby installed

Solution - Open Shell in emby jail and type pkg install ffmpeg

This solved his issue

Anyway after installing the latest Emby i had forgot about his issue and it popped up when trying to watch an episode of Not the 9'0clock news so i jumped onto the shell and got ffmp sorted. After i did this i tried rescanning the music just in case it was related and nothing. Before bed i had the idea to remove the music music library and start again to see if it just needed a fresh library after the ffmpeg install. Woke up this morning and set up a new library.

It's scanning at the moment and will take a long time but so far the results are looking promising and hopefully it will clean up as it scans the music in.

So it's scanned in the music and for the majority besides 2 albums with wrong cover all albums are correct covers but artists are screwed, some artists come up about 3 or 4 times each like the photo above having some of their albums spread over the duplicates, some albums like tangerine dream are showing up as David Bowie as the artist, Brian Ferry is showing up as Alvin Stardust, Billy Fury albums showing up as 13th Chime and stuff like that.

I removed the music library and deleted all the album.nfo files from my music folder thinking that may of been the issue then started a new scan and it's part the way through with the same issues of pulling the majority of albums info down correctly but the artist for the albums a lot of them are mixed up. What could be causing the issue?

I would start at the files and check their embedded data.. verify any ID's within the files.. and check settings for the Library to be sure... I also have had a bout of issues.. I do not understand enough to post about.. and tried everything that I know to try.... other than completely destroying this installation, and trying again.. Problem is, I have done this a couple of times and ran into issues.. READ/Write cycles for the thing are off the chart.. seemingly every time something is different... I never wanted to import until I had completely finished ALL changes.. clerical stuff... nothing that should have effected adding the Library, scanning, and refreshing meta. I am on BETA.. however..

This will be something someone definitely needs to chime in on... that knows more about the installation.. Definitely wait for all aggregation of data and the final result after before making finals on what actually occurred.. It does several steps initially.. Which I wonder if that is the issue sometimes.. maybe the routines are different.. and in some cases it has to be done that way to fix things that went wrong for various reasons..

EDIT: I have been wondering about installing and adding FFPROBE and FFMPEG to my variables to see if it would help but haven't yet.. ( On Windows 10 )

This morning after an overnight scan i checked and many artists albums are named wrong such as The Doors albums are showing up as 13th Chime, i copied The Doors off the server to my desktop then deleted them off the server and give Emby a rescan, deleted all album.nfo files from the doors and then ran them through musicbrainz and they all show correct information and loaded them into Rhythmbox and again all correct.

Re uploaded them to the server and re scanned Emby music and still they all jump under the artist 13th Chime, artists embedded info is all correct, checked the metadata for album artist & album and it's all pointing to the correct artist & album.

Found a solution and result

When installing Emby on Free/Truenas your given two options in the plugins

Emby

Emby-Server

I have always gone with Emby as it was the first one i used and i didn't really know the difference between the two so it made sense with just Emby. I upgraded from Freenas to Truenas by switching the train from Free to True and then updating which switched me to Truenas and Emby continued to work with no problems. After my Jails issue i swiped the iocage and plug ins and started again. This time Emby developed my issues with Audio and having to install ffmpeg to be able to play video, i think the Emby plugin is borked or is out of date in their plugins section hence the issues.

Installed Emby-Server in a new jail, mounted a test folder, added a few movies, TV series and a handful of albums that are problematic on my install and created the media libraries in Emby-server, Everything scanned in, the albums though stayed blank, i tested a movie and it gave me the no compatible streams issue, dropped into a shell, installed ffmpeg, restarted Emby then did a complete scan of the media. Everything scanned in correctly, albums and artists all correct.

Nuked this test install, fresh install of Emby-Server and currently it's adding in most of the media correctly other than a handful of artists & albums that once i finish ill have to delete the album.nfo file and any jpeg images of incorrect albums that it downloaded and rescan and it should all look like it did before my jails issue.

RESULT :)

I stopped the music scan part the way through as wanted to get my other media libraries re added, added all the libraries, installed the plugins i use and started a new scan and will now wait a day or two as it scans in hundreds of movies, thousands of music and so on.

There is a couple of oddities with the music.

Some artists albums are showing as an album cover by a different band with the same name, after venturing into the Annie Lennox folder and checking the said album i noticed it's downloaded a folder.jpg and it is of the wrong artist, i removed the album.nfo and wrong album cover before i did this large scan and have re checked Annie whilst this scan goes on and it's corrected the album cover so i can work my way through the odd few albums to correct it.

Various artists & compilations, some of them are showing up as Alvin Stardust so we have two Alvin Stardust artists, one the artist and the other as seen below of various artists?

Be sure to let the scan complete and work through it's thing.. give it a little time to show up right.

Various Artist does not exist..in my Library.. I have done something different.. Even the albums showing up here are ALL going to compilations with different artist from tack to track.. I think this is relative but I keep wondering if it isn't because of the example seems off to me for some reason.. ( I just woke up..sorry ) 😜

SO to explain.. if you have an album which has an album artist of 'Various Artist', then all of the artist are going to appear on that album and art is going to reflect it...

I have chosen to change all f the Unknowns and Various Artist to something legitimate and sensible.. such as the name of the release Series.. ( fabric, FABRICLIVE, Global Underground, or the name of the Artist compiling the tracks.. Record Label which did so.. ) Most of these become custom Album Artist.. to get rid of that background and microphone...

It is not advised to write the song artist for each song over to the album artist tags.. this separates all of the songs out all over and aggregates them to the artist entries individually and never shows the album.. Makes a mess or wreck of it. So it is important to check the originating file metadata tags for consistency sake..

A couple of examples of what I have done with mine... ( Custom entry for 'Various Artist' Record Label Series  ) I haven't entered in custom information about the album artist in EMBY yet so.. but you still see the images and albums.. and how they are aggregated. Mostly all from embedded data. ( I could make entries at online databases for this stuff but haven't got that far yet. Nor are databases actually sending back proper information for some of these.. and soundtracks are ridiculous.. - I used the movie name for it.. because they have a ton of artist and missing credits for the track compilation of the movie.. but is relative to the movie creation.. so forth.. anyway.

Thank you for the recommendation, i actually took everything off that fell under the various artists/Alvin Stardust tag and re scanned then re ran a compilation through music brainz and then re uploaded it and again it jumps back under the Alvin Stardust/Various Artists tag, i can't figure out why it's tagging it all as Alvin Stardust when so far all the metadata, images, track listing and so on are all correct and pointing to Various artists.

i even removed the actual Alvin Stardust artist to see if that made a difference and no so still trying to work out where the issue is.

Search for all instances of ALVIN STARDUST... go to each one.. get the PATH or location.. then load all albums into Picard or TagScanner ( recommend TagScanner if your on Windows for this ).. Comb through all of the metadata for this name... make sure none of the tags within the files are containing anything odd..

There may be something in there that is going to be hard to find... but this is probably going to be the only way.. The straight up artist folder may not be what contains it...
