Issues with Q90T and Samsung Frame TVs (2020 models)

Paint

Recommended Posts

I am using the Emby app on two different 2020 Samsung TVs (75in Q90T and a 55in Samsung Frame TVs).

I am finding that live TV or any other playback will work but after 5-15 minutes the stream will pause and stop. After a minute or so, it will kick me back to the Emby homescreen.

I am then able to resume the playback at where the stream failed.

I dont have these issues when using a Fire stick, only when using the EMBY app on the Samsung TVs.

Hi there, let's look at an example. Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. thanks !

Ill post a full debug log soon. However, there is definitely an issue with the Emby app on Samsung TVs. I just brought my fire stick to test in the same house, wifi and Emby server-the fire stick works perfectly, while Samsung Emby app will freeze and stop playback every 5 to 20 minutes.

A guess but sounds like the two are using different playback methods ie one direct playing and the other transcoding.

The issue occurs on the Samsung emby app regardless of direct play or transcoding - after 5 to 20 minutes, the stream stops and the emby app times out for about 2-3 minutes. I then need to restart the stream.

The firestick works with direct play or transcoding.

If it were a app issue I would expect more reports.  But devs will have to look at logs showing the issue.

Here are the logs for watching Top Chef on a Samsung Q90t 75in (Bergen 1B basement from user Josh) with the latest app version 1.0.88. Playback just stops after a few minutes of watching and then app times out for a minute, then i am able to resume. If i watch via a firestick, i can watch for hours without any issues.

Im capturing another log now with debugging on and this time Top Chef is playing via direct play

Please also attach any ffmpeg logs related to these playbacks and the media info for this movie

There are no ffmepg playbacks for these since there is no transcoding. Today everything has been direct streaming. Ill capture one with transcoding and include a ffmpeg log

Do you mean DirectStreaming or DirectPlaying? There is a difference.

DirectPlaying e.g. no transcoding required for the stream

What hardware is your server on?  I can see in the log that it is struggling to keep up, with transcoding speeds less than 1x which is the absolute minimum for playback

Not sure why the TV chokes and the FireTV does not, but the only difference in the transcode logs I see is FireTV transcodes the 20Mb stream at 20Mb and the TV is transcoding the 20Mb stream to 7Mb, assuming limit applied to the TV (TranscodeReasons=ContainerBitrateExceedsLimit).

Yep, it would be worth removing any bitrate limits.

I dont have any bitrate limits on.

The server is a Intel Xeon 6240 Gold CPU (20C/40T) that does not have much load at all. I dont think transcoding is the issue.

I have Enable throttling on, which I just turned off to see if that makes a difference.

Transcoding thread count: is set to Auto

where else should I be checking to see if there are transcoding bitrate limits besides the transcoding page and each user's settings page? Both of the pages for my user are blank so I assume that means unlimited.

The client playback/quality setting.  Sometime Auto will do this but not familiar with TV Client.

What's weird is if i ever had any transcoding or bandwidth issues with the firestick,it would pause and then restart when bandwidth or transcoding caught up. On the Samsung, the stream never restarts. I need to close the app and resume. If I do wait 5 minutes or so, it will resume playing the episode prior to the one I am watching.

Im running this on a 20 core, 40 thread machine with ultra low load. I think the transcoding issue is a false flag....

You shouldn't be having transcoding issues with this processor, but if transcoding rate is not at least 1x then you're going to have issues.  It should be transcoding faster than this.

Do you have GPU/Hardware transcoding enabled?

I have a nvidia 3080 in the machine but I have hardware encoding off set in Emby
