Videos freezing during playback

I have thus far watched 4 movies with the new configuration of Server 3 and MB-C, and during each of them I'm finding that the file freezes, stutters or hangs, for roughly 4-5 minutes at a time. It happens with .ISO files, .MKV and .AVIs. After the frozen section passes playback is all good for about 10-20 minutes. It seems to happen at random, although tonight, during "Thor", most of the freezes happened during periods of loud audio, explosions or when all tracks are maxed out.

The movie played properly in VLC player to a different machine. I've had the Windows 7 Task manager up and neither RAM nor CPU appear to be maxed out during the freezes. So I'm not even sure I know where I should be looking. Any thoughts? This is an absolute killer problem

How can I tell? This is still pretty new to me. I'm more a "set it and forget it" kinda guy for the most part and I don't fully understand what's under the hood. Since the source material is an .ISO on my LAN, what is the difference here between playing directly and streaming?

No screen shots, but it's best described as the image freezing on screen for a few seconds, then one or two second jumps, followed by a blocky, distorted image being frozen on screen. Half second playback, 1 second pause, etc. Then back to normal within a few minutes. Behaviour repeating about every 5 to 20 minutes, randomly.

Server: MB 3 Server, Version 3.0.5326.13255

MB Classic version 3.0.196.0.7.19-1

Log attached. For the MBClassic log, playback of the title in question begins at 2014-08-01 07:46:33, about halfway down the log.

Even zipped, I cannot upload the full server log. I've uploaded a portion of it that seems to be around the time of the failures.

Looks like it is playing properly from our perspective.  What codecs do you have installed?

Well, in order to play just about anything other than DVD rips in WMC you would have needed to install some sort of codec pack.  We recommend LAV because it is very simple and works with almost everything.

These are DVD rips to .ISO with the occasional .MKV thrown in for good measure. I have no idea what's in there now. How would I find out and this LAV you're mentioning, where to get it and what do I do with it? This is still very much a dark art to me.

But what's more relevant is why is MB-C doing this when MB-2 gave no hint of trouble for years?

Followup: It turns out I do have the LAV Codecs installed. I am still getting random freezes and slowdowns, even after a clean reboot.

This also got me thinking. Since this box is a dedicated HTPC machine running windows 7, and has both MB server and Classic, what should I have running on bootup? It is a PC after all, not a commercially-built embedded device, so it's bound to have a lot of crap running.

Obviously I want real-time antivirus and anti-malware protection but what else should be running on the system? Are there apps that are known to cause excessive slowness or playback problems? My A/V is Microsoft Security Essentials and Spybot S&D.
