Dolby Vision support

Recommended Posts

The MKV standard was updated to properly support Dolby Vision and Plex has recently released support for it.

I strongly dislike Plex (the performance is abysmal) and prefer Emby for 99% of the time, but DV support is really nice.

Is there an ETA for Emby (on Android/Android TV and maybe iOS/tVOS) to support Dolby Vision in mkv?

I use a Shield TV 2019 atm (and will get the new Apple TV 2020 4K when it get's released) and prefer DV to HDR10 (on my OLED LG).

You can try the ET for Android beta app which has the new Exoplayer  Just sideload the apk in the first post of the link below and it's a separate app so you can have ET and ATV on your Shield at the same time.

What formats?  I'm playing a mkv Dolby Vision movie right now.  You may want to post in the beta section

ebr also mentioned something about he may add the new Exoplayer with DV into the next round of beta for ATV.

I am an Android TV User on LG CX over Shield 2019. The Android TV App is more suitable for TV App, so will there be an Dolby Vision Update for the ExoPlayer like Plex?

That would be great, and I am switching Plex off.

Hi.  Yes.  We are currently waiting on Amazon to catch up to Google.

Can you add the DV version of Exoplayer that @Luke has developed to the ATV app for Google based devices in the meantime please?

Or is that not possible yet?

Thanks.

Sorry, no it just isn't that simple.  If Amazon doesn't move this week, I'll take an alternate path.

Try this, works for me in ATV as an external player

Works fine for DV. The player appearance is a bit simple...

When I play files with DV and DTS, DTS is not automatically transcoded to AC3 since I deactivated it on Shield. LG CX has no DTS passthrough and Sonos doesn't support DTS.

But this should be fixed in the next release according to the moderators.

Could you fix this problem temporarily in this player you posted?

I tried the beta version on android TV (Sony), and when I play Casino Royal, there is no DV in Emby. It's not a file problem since it's played fine by plex.

Is there a setting I missed ?

THanks,

J

More than likely it is a format not supported by the TV.  Sony TVs only support DV profile 5 and so we limit it to that.

Even though the other guys are triggering DV, it is likely that the colors are not what they actually should be - but this could be content-specific.

Thanks you for the explanation ebr, how may I check the DV level on a file ?

J.

I believe if you run media info on it you can discern it from the output.  I think profile 5 is mostly used by streaming services.

Thank you FrostByte for pointing out the Emby Theater for Android beta. I was looking for a better client for nVidia Shield and this was a huge improvement. Only issue is I am using a Logitech remote via a USB dongle on the shield and I'm getting double keys on the arrow keys. Never seen it fail on any other app. I don't mind using the Shield remote. This has improved my Android TV experience immensely.
