help with server connectivity problems

suddenly my mac is having problems staying connected to my nas.  the drive keeps unmounting from finder, and the dsm page in my browser can't stay connected.  Both my mac and my nas are connected to my router with ethernet cables.  I had to access some files from the nas, so I used another ethernet cable to direct connect my nas to my mac.  That allowed the nas to stay mounted in finder.  However, synology assistant still cannot find my nas, so i can't log in to the dsm to check any settings.  Any ideas on what to try?
