Permit subtitle backgrounds for better visibility

Feature Request

Permit subtitle backgrounds for better visibility. It would be good to allow subtitle backgrounds with variable opacity so that the sub text can overlay any existing text. There might be issues where the subtitle is in the same color as the background that might cause viewing issues. I understand that you can change the text color, but this is inconvenient to change the subtitle color to avoid the issue.

Let's say I'm watching a video with white hardsubs, and it conflicts with my external subs. Having sub backgrounds would permit a more enjoyable viewing experience and prevent the need to change the color.

Example

Netflix has a subtitle appearance that permits subtitle backgrounds.

If you're using ET as your player you can do this yourself by manually editing the mpv.conf file (it's stored in %appdata%\mpv).

Add the line:

sub-back-color="#77CCCCCC" (where 77 is transparency and CCCCCC is the hex colour of the background you want).

More details here: https://mpv.io/manual/master/#options-sub-back-color

Thanks AdrianW. Brilliant idea!

I’m using the AndroidTV, iOS and iPadOS primarily, so I don’t think I can use the mpv workaround. Would be nice to see this as a core feature.

Hi

I agree i would love to see this feature on emby. Plex and netflixs have it.

Also i would like to be able to position the subtitles myself on the TV screen.

Thanks

All possible with ET and settings in mpv.conf (as long as you never enter the subtitles option in the ET settings menu).

+1 on these features and I would also like to be able to position subtitles lower on the screen especially when watching 2:35 aspect ratio.

I use Nvidia shield Pro and android mobile and tablet.
