NVIDIA vs Intel Hardware Acceleration

Hi everyone! So far, I've been running Emby on my home server, which was built from old spare parts. I'm looking to rebuild it mostly from scratch. The current CPU is an old AMD without any integrated GPU, so I'm currently running an NVIDIA GTX 970Ti to enable hardware acceleration.

For the new build, I can either stick with this GPU or buy an Intel with QuickSync support. Sticking with NVIDIA means I have many more options for the CPU (e.g. Xeon), since I don't need an integrated GPU. I can also swap out the GTX for a Quadro at a later point, since that's more geared towards this kind of thing. On the other hand, going with the Intel means I can take out the discrete GPU altogether and cut down on fan noise, which is less of a concern, honestly.

As far as I can tell from the wiki, the supported encoding/decoding formats are pretty much the same, so I'm wondering what the pros and cons are for each technology as it pertains to Emby. Thanks!

It depandes on how many streams HW accelerate you required at the same time.

For my experiences, the Intel 600series gps can prove 2 streams high rates 4K HDR 10bits or 4 streams low rates 4K HDR 10bits at the same time.  It can use VAAPI reach to more effeciency.

For Nvidia, you can follow this artical to choose, what you want.

But you need to know that Nvidia has a 3 sessions limited on linux, you can also follow this artical to using the specific version of driver to unlock this limit.

By APU, I have not any experiences on emby HW accelerated, so I can only provide you some references, you can have a look.

Awesome, thanks for the speedy response!

I definitely should have clarified my use case. For the most part, it's just me that uses my server, so the only transcoding will be when I'm watching something remotely (all my local clients support direct play for all of my media). In order to future-proof, though, it seems like NVIDIA is my best option for adding more streams moving forward, assuming I unlock the limit like you said. I'll stick with NVIDIA then and go with a CPU with no integrated GPU. Thanks!
