NJ RadioGuy 2
Hi all, I've been using a combination of Media Center Master and Media Browser (I guess it's classic--haven't upgraded or so much as touched the software in 2 years) to play DVD ISO files and other MP4/AVI/MKV files on my NAS with great success. But now I tried playing a rip of a BR-D and I'm getting an error message telling me that it needs an external player. Well, I'm completely new to this aspect of things, so what should I be doing to play this file? Is there any somewhat low-cost software that will allow simple playback of this content? Thanks in advance.
Pais 115
I use TotalMedia Theatre 6 as my external player for 3D Blu-ray ISO files. I have the HTPC setup to automatically launch TotalMedia Theatre when an iso is mounted, which Media Browser Classic can handle. I'm not sure if it's the cheapest/best solution, but it works well enough for me. Another option would be to convert the blu-ray to MKV without any loss in quality. Then you can play the blu-ray movie using freely available codec without the need to invest in an external player.
NJ RadioGuy 2
Kinda hard to stomach the idea of $80 software when my hardware DVD player was only $45 <G>. I do like the idea of an MKV conversion, and I probably have the software to do just that. I think I may just go back to buying DVDs rather than BR-Ds and live with upconversion. I notice the quality of newer releases still looks pretty good, maybe 80% of 1080p.
legallink 187
You'll notice the drop back to DVD. I didn't notice it nearly as much as with the digital content. We rip everything to MKV and can spot a DVD all too easily compared to a blu-ray, so we buy mostly blu-rays now. I never really cared for disc menus which is why I rip to MKV's.
