New Server Build Question?

Sorry if this question has been asked.

If it has, please p0int me in the right direction!

I am about to embark on building a new server for my home and need some opinions.

Here is what I would like to do;

I would like to have a server to serve up all my media (Movies, Music, Photos, etc).

I would also like to have a separate NAS to hold my hard drives with my media on them and to do backups.

Here is what I have so far;

Media Server...

Thermaltake Core V71 Case AMD Ryzen 5 3600X 6-Core/Wraith Spire Cooler MSI Gaming Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB GDDR6 XPG Spectrix D41 RGB 3600MHz 32GB Thermaltake Toughpower Grand RGB 850W 80+ Gold

250gb SSD for operating system and Emby.

NAS Server...

Right now I have an older Dell I'm thinking of using for this (This is my media server right now).

AMD Phenom II X4

32gb Ram

No GPU.

Thinking of purchasing a Silverston CS380 (8 Drive SAS/SATA hot-swap).

Also, I currently have these harddrives;

2 WD Easy Stores, 8tb each. (Reds).

Seagate BarraCuda 8TB

A few older 2tb drives.

I Plan to purchase a couple more WD Reds (8tb). OR

Should I look at the Seagate IronWolf - 7200RPM compared to 5200rpm WD's?

I've never built a NAS so I am looking for guidance.

Should I use FreeNAS? Hot Swap or No?

Also would like opinions on if I am going in the right direction or not.

I appreciate any input!

The new server will be more than powerful enough for Emby.

The NAS will also be plenty powerful enough. My only comment would be weighing the cost of energy to run the Phenom versus a newer low power CPU. Do you have any other services you want to run on the NAS? Downloaders, download clients, webservers, etc?

I personally like unRaid for NAS software for its simplicity and ease of use. It is also great for dockers and VMs should you need them. I am not convinced hotswap drive bays are worth it unless you need 100% uptime and are swapping out drives often. I just see them as an added cost and additional point of failure.

I can tell you what I use, but I'm not really qualified to advise. I just built a PC for general use and as an Emby server. Just got a Fractal Design R5 as it takes 8 hdds plus two ssds plus two spaces for blu-ray drives. Added a 3700X, 16GB ram, 512GB m2 ssd, 1660 Super card, tv tuner card. Windows 10. So no NAS, no unraid, no dockers. Just back up manually to external usb drives. Works fine for just the household and one or two off site users. Probably overkill but the 3700X is good for Handbrake.

Again thats just what I have. Its good, but different from what you seem to want.

Thanks JDiesel & AirBee99!

I did go with the bigger processor because I will be running a number of services.

Plus I have a ton of conversions to do.

And - i like PC games too!

I almost purchased the Fractal R5 myself but I liked the drive cages of the Core V71.

I use a HD Homerun for Cable TV. Works great on FireTVs via Emby.

I also picked up an M.2 500gb to use in the Main Server.

I also just picked up a Rosewill Thor v2 for my NAS system.

Again - Thank you for the input.

Well, I guess I misread the replies. The Phenom will be in the NAS system.

JDiesel, what would you recommend in place of it?

If you have the Phenom already then use it. It doesn't draw that much power at idle or doing NAS stuff and it will be faster than all but the bigger Intel based pre-builts like Synology or QNAP.

My Emby and NAS server had a Phenom II x4 for almost a year and it only lacked in transcoding. The big question is can the motherboard handle the storage and/or have the slots for the controllers needed?

Q-Droid,

The motherboard has the following;

Expansion Slots;

1 PCI Express x16 slot Gen 2 speed

3 PCI Express x1 slots

1 PCI Express x1 mini card socket

and 4 onboard SATA tho I have expansion cards for SATA 3.

I think the only thing I need to do is upgrade the powr supply.

Thanks for your input!
