Choosing hardware

I need some opinions/advice on which would have better performance for use with 10 users on Emby in Windows 10. Particularly transcoding.

 

I currently use a desktop computer with i7-4790 3.6Ghz 16GB (4 cores 8 threads) with a GTX1660 and HD4600

I have available a Dell server with 2 Xeon E5-2450 2.5Ghz 64GB (16 cores 32 threads) and would use the GTX1660

All the Emby libraries are on a FreeNAS server. Both computers have SSD's

 

The Dell server has redundancy, more threads, and memory but no Intel GPU and slower clock speeds.

 

What are the Emby pros and cons of switching to the Dell server to run Emby? Is it worth making the switch?

I am unsure about how Emby utilizes threads.

You're saying your current setup can't handle the load?  I'd think the dual xeon setup would be what you'd want if your current setup is struggling.... it's a beast.  Passmark says you should be able to do roughly 14 transcodes.  The big con here imo is going to be power consumption.  95w x 2 under full load is an expensive proposition if you're hammering it every day.  And you'd obviously lose the ability to use hardware acceleration.  So I dunno, but if your current setup isn't up to the task, not much to lose trying right?

Passmark says you should be able to do roughly 14 transcodes.

How do you calculate/estimate that?

You could always drop in NVIDIA Quadro P2000 as from I have heard it should give you 20+ user

I did run a few tests and noticed that software converting is better than hardware with the GTX1660.

Converting a 365MB AVI to MP4, software encoding took 30 seconds and created a 415MB file. Whereas hardware encoding took 25 seconds but created a 940MB file.

I wonder if the size would improve with a Quadro P2000/4000 or if ffmpeg sets the size and Quadro sets the speed.

 

As far as transcoding, looks like the P2000 is a good choice. I did apply the patch to My GTX1660 to remove the session limitation.

 

Is the previous comment of 14 simultaneous transcodes assuming software transcodes? And does that bump up with a P2000? I do plan to add more users. I looked at the specs and think the Quadro RTX4000 is the best choice because of the turing chipset, 8GB, 2 decoders, and it takes up less space in the I/O slots.

CPU transcodes only.  I'm not sure how it would change if you add a GPU since you can't pick and choose, either you use CPU or you use GPU.
