Trailers (again) - Only plays half of the trailer

Recommended Posts

Good day,

From the mb3 server dashboard:

Scheduled Tasks: then click on the arrow for this option:

53bb2fb83bd5a_mediab3abo1798.jpg

Let it finish, then test the trailers again.

Also make sure you have space in your hard disk just in case, or you can change the path to be saved from within the mb3 server dashboard (where you setup the channel).

My best

Thanks for the answer.. I did that, it got to about 1.3% then decided that was it (left it for over 1 hour). The cache directory for the trailers (I set it to a different location other than the default) created a directory (GUID name by the looks of it) but didn't load anything into that directory.

Might try it again now and see what happens..

Thanks,

Rob

EDIT: Just started again and it has decided to download OK and files are appearing in the folder. I will let that go and test later.. Thanks.

Hi,

Ok, I only use MBC and not interested in MBT.

I found that I did not have a separate Trailer option on the main EHS like MBC2. Worked out I had to add them as a "Channel" which I did, and since I had only one channel, the option appeared in MBC3 EHS.

When I selected it, there were no trailers, so went back to the Server Config and realised I had to tick on the option to "Enable Channel Content for Trailers".

After a few moments, went back into MBC3 and there were trailers.

If those steps are wrong, please let me know.

I Selected one trailer and got the trailer synopsis screen.

Selected PLAY, screen went to the MB blue screen for about 2 seconds, and started playing the trailer (although slightly stuttering, but I knew that was because of the 1080 trailer.. why cant we go back to the old way and have it download before playing. I have a very good broadband connection and it still stutters).

The synopsis screen stated the trailer was 2 minutes long, but just before the 1 minute mark, it stopped and went back to the synopsis screen.

NO Buffering, nothing appeared on the screen saying it was buffering like in MBC2

Tried another one. This time it said it was 1 minute long. Again, is stopped just before 1/2 way at 25 seconds. Back to the synopsis screen.

Tried 5 more, all the same scenario.

I'm not interested in having trailers for all my movies. I don't see the point of that.

But what I do want is trailers of new movies being released in the coming months/year...

So, the question: What's going on... Why are the trailers only playing half then ending.

Why has something been broken that previously seemed to work flawlessly... I wouldn't mind waiting 20 seconds for it to download the whole trailer before playing like previously.

Thanks for the reply.

I ran a trailer through MBC and it bailed again. The following is from the log (I turned on the Debug Log option) when I started it playing to after it bailed. If you need all the other stuff in the log, please let me know.

I am on the latest release versions.

I even bumped up the Max Bitrates in the Streaming Config section under MBC to 40 (both local and remote).

I couldn't even get them to play at all until I installed the LAV Filters (as per instructions in this forum). The only filters/codecs installed.

The temp location and main drive is on an SSD.

As you can see from the log, the 1 minute trailer bailed at 36 seconds of play with a "PlaybackStopped reported with null media info"

Ok. In that build of MBC the server is streaming them from apple and then transcoding on the fly to wmv for WMC.

Ebr has since released a newer build that takes a more direct approach. What version of MBC are you running?

Thanks for your fast reply.

The version (which I thought was the latest as I only installed it last week) is 3.0.187.0 6-20.1

Under the configurator, if I click Check for System updates, nothing happens (even if I set the System Level and Plug-In level to Beta).

Should something happen (or are the updates controlled by the server)?

Thanks,

Rob

There are some later builds in testing that resolve this issue. I would just hang tight and I'm guessing it will be available on the beta channel any day now. Not to worry. We are working on resolving it for you.

Yeah, a new beta of MBC should be available in the next couple of days.

Thought I better report back since the MBC classic updated twice today (once in the morning, then went I went to test the trailers about 8 hours later.. betas I think).

Anyway, this is what happens and although it seems OK, replaying the Trailer I think has a problem.

1) Playing a new trailer (one that hasn't been buffered previously). Buffers to 100% (seems to take 1.5 seconds per percent, but I will put that down to where it is "buffering" the trailer from plus I want best quality and that is set in the Server). Once buffered, the trailer plays perfect.

Now the problem

2) If I play the trailer again, whether straight away or after playing another trailer, it buffers again, but buffers to 100% in a few seconds (I presume reading the cached download) then plays. The problem. After every 5 seconds, the playback stops and rebuffering occurs from 0-100% occurs (within a few seconds) then starts to play again. Plays another 5 seconds (give or take a few) does the stop and buffering again.

This is a problem.... Right?

I would presume that once the trailer is downloaded the first time, you should just be replaying the file back from cache and it wouldn't need buffering.

Any ideas? Do you want me to try something else?

Thanks,

Rob

Unless you've enabled downloading of trailers we never download them.  They are streamed on demand.

Hi Luke,

I want 1080p as I can stream that directly from the Apple trailers website, same system, without any issues. No pausing, etc. So if it works direct, I would have thought it would work fine under MBC

However, since my last post and before your reply, I tested out something.

I set the Server from Best Quality to 720p and tested several trailers.

They consistently do what happens after I have "streamed" a 1080p version for the first time, with one exception. They all buffer from 0-100% within 2 seconds (I don't have to wait 3 minutes for a trailer to stream in the first place), and then start playing. The exception is that the trailer plays without out missing a beat each time, every time and I don't see the buffering message come up while the trailer is playing.

The only issue is, the 720p is blocky and transitions between scenes is not smooth (have seen this reported before). That probably isn't your fault as you are streaming what you receive.

I know it is only "Trailers" and there are more important things to complete under MB, but I do think there is some issue with the Trailers plugin if the trailer is over 720p as MBC behaves differently in the first instance of streaming to subsequent streaming of the same trailer.

Anyway, the amount of time I look at these trailers, I can live with the 720p setting.

well there are no 1080p trailers. it's a generalized setting that applies to all channels. for apple, it's only 720p or 480p. even the 480p is higher quality than usual.

there will be no difference from first to second viewing as far as mbc or the server are concerned. but as it is streaming from an external source, that is the unknown factor which may or may not be different from one play to the next.

Hi Luke.

Thanks again for a response and discussion.

That is interesting what you state and now makes me think there is a problem with the trailers when selecting between Best Quality/1080p or 720p as the 720p works as I would expect, except lower quality than if it is set to Best Quality.

There is definitely a BIG difference, so how do you explain that? I wish I could record it for you to see what occurs. The log isn't saying anything (like no streaming/program errors etc)

If I go direct to the Apple Trailers site, and play one of the trailers, it is hi-res like when I have 1080p or Best quality selected under MB except It runs/streams fine at that Hi-Res, but under MB it doesn't.

Could it be the LAV filters aren't setup correctly as streaming direct from the site (using IE) seems to use Quicktime.

As a programmer (and media technology junkie) I am just trying to get the best from my equipment, plus get my head around what I see is a definitive issue between how the Best Quality setting and 720p setting work differently when as you state are the same.

Thanks,

Rob

Hi EBR.

Ok, I have turned on download previously, but as the Media PC is not on 100% time (only when I want to watch something that isn't that often), it never downloads.

But that doesn't explain why the first time "stream" of the trailer takes a long time to buffer to 100% (before it starts playing), then plays perfect, but each time after that, it buffers 0-100% really fast, plays 2-5 secs, pauses, buffers 0-100% really fast again, plays for 2-5 seconds, and keeps going like that.

I tried the same trailer again (12 hours later) and it streams 2%, then starts playing (totally different to the first time streamed) but then jumps every 1-2 seconds while it buffers.

I never had this issue with MB2 and once it had streamed the first time, it seemed to have retained the file.

Wouldn't it be best that if the trailer is streamed, you keep the file in case, like me, I want to view it again at a later date (similar to the downloading of them, but rather downloading 98 of them, I think that is how many trailers at the moment, it just retains the ones chosen)?

Thanks again,

Rob

apple's 720p trailers nowadays are extremely high bitrate. much higher than ever before. they're usually around 11mbps, which is a higher bitrate than many bluray tv episodes. if you can't get a consistently smooth stream from apple, and you don't want to use the downloading feature, then you can try setting your channel quality setting to 480p. apple has 480p versions and they usually weigh in around 1.5mbps.

Are you doing this with the new Beta of MBC?  As we said earlier, it handles streaming trailers differently than 187.

Hi EBR.

Yes, the latest new beta.

Also, I have another issue now. After trying 3-4 trailers, when I select one that I have played before, the screen goes black and nothing. If I select BACK (on the remote), the Synopsis screen shows and the "black" screen is behind (normally I would see a trailer playing). If I press stop, the black screen disappears and goes back to normal background.

Just cant get any previous trailers that I have watched to play now.

I was thinking it might be the trailer server unavailable, but tried it under IE and it worked fine.

I thought it might be the codecs (LAV) but I rebooted the PC and still the same.

@@rb0135 My trailers start from playing great before the updates to constant buffering. Back to playing decent and now its back to buffering. I gave up so I just download them. Perhaps you should do the same. I am having a hard time understanding the concept of how the channel work vs the way it used to work. As you mentioned above, I can playback any trailers from the apple site without any issues on the same computer. At one point they had Trailers in EHS and in channels. I play the same trailer in both plugins and the playback was smooth in the old plugin and constant buffer in the new one.

Hello, i'd like to report that I'm having issues also since the trailers became a channel. I never had an issue at all when it was a plugin.

When trying to play a trailer, it will start playing for 5 - 30 secs then stop for no reason.
