Nvidia GeForce discreet card for transcoding

Recommended Posts

I have a FreeNAS server (11.3-U2) with a supermicro X10XL7-F-O board, Intel Xeon E3 and 32GB Ram. I have a GeForce GTX 970 FTW+ laying around. Would it be beneficial to slap that card in for better Emby performance?

Thanks.

Hi, currently no because we haven't added Nvidia hardware acceleration to our FreeBSD server yet.

I'm sure we'll get there, assuming Nvidia even supports it for FreeBSD.

As far as I know in order to begin looking at supporting this you need a FreeBSD 12 base, FreeNAS isn't quite there yet and may be closer to 2021 before they get there.

Thanks for the replies.

To perhaps skirt this issue, could a person create a Windows 10 VM inside of FreeNAS, install emby on the virtualized windows installation, create a network share using the FreeNAS SMB shares, point the emby library to those network share(s).  This is assuming that FreeNAS VM's have the ability to passthrough a GPU to the Windows 10 VM installation.

Otherwise, using Proxmox, virtualize FreeNAS, virtualize Windows 10.  Install emby on Windows 10, passthrough the GPU...

All I'm trying to do here is consolidate - don't want a bunch of boxes running for all of the different purposes.

To my knowledge no. I don't believe FreeNAS has this capability yet. It may be possible when they move to a base of FreeBSD 12. But I've also heard it could be possible to give jails access to it as well once it hits FreeBSD12.

This may be possible, not my area of expertise, but I've often heard FreeNAS doesn't play nice when virtualized. If you had spare hardware lying around that you could do some tests with it, it could be worth the experiment. But I wouldn't do it as a test on your main system.
