Custom images for music artist

This may need to be a new feature request but I'll ask if it can already be done first. I had to turn off all of the music scraper plugins (musicbrainz, audiodb, etc.) because of the corruption it was causing in my music library (i.e.duplicate artist entries and the like). The library is behaving mostly like I want it to now but when I go to Artist and Album Artist views there are no images of artists. I can manually place an image there but it is a time consuming proposition due to the number of steps required just to place one image in. Imagine multiplying by 1000 or so.

When I view by folder, the artist images are there because the folder views are in alphabetical order much like the artist and album artist views. But folder view is using the folder.jpg image for that folder that I had previously loaded for each folder and thereby artist.

Artist and album artist views are no longer there because I've turned off those services.

2 potential questions... (1) is there a name that I can give an image file and load it to the artist's folder so that it will be automatically picked up as an artist image file similar to how folder.jpg is handled for folder images? Like if I name it <primary.jpg> or something, will it auto populate my artist images in Music->Artist view?

(2) if that doesn't work is there any way to tell Emby to use folder.jpg as artist image?

Okay 3rd question then, is there a way other than music meta plugins to bulk/batch handle artist images under views inside of music?

Just checking.

Thx

Ed

HI, what you could try is adding folder.jpg and then running a library scan. Please see if that helps. Thanks.

Yes I've tried that and again it works for folder view but doesn't populate images for artist view and album artist view. I suspect because I have all of the metadata scrapers turned off. I'll continue to populate manually but if you would consider for the future that if scrapers are turned off that Emby would default to using the folder.jpg image for artist and album artist that would be great.

Do I need to repost this in feature requests as well? I can if need be. Let me know.

Thx

Ed

Only folder view will use folder images.

I haven't done a restore yet but the People Backup plugin works on Artists also.

@@pünktchen  Could someone point the plugin path for Artists to there music library, assuming they are using artist folders to read artist image and nfo.

I can see one possible issue as the Folder name may not match database name, like I can see a difference in my \Music\AC-DC folder and my backup \artists-ACDC.

But if you want to do the work, create folders by artistnames and put folder.jpg and the plugin should be able to restore into Emby.

This works with the "Kodi Style" option.

@@Happy...yes this is what I want.  I already have all of my music files organized first by artist folder, then all of the albums for that artist under the artist folder.  So structure is \Music\Artist\Album\song files.  You're saying that I can load this People plugin and it will use the folder.jpg image up at the artist folder level to populate the artist views in the music library?  So I load the plugin and point the artist path to the same location as my music folders (i.e.artist folders) and it should pick up the folder.jpg?  I wonder what happens at the next level down?  Because I have nested album folders within those artist folders and they too have folder.jpg files.  I wonder if using this method will I also get a lot of album images on the artist view for each album that I have folder.jpg files.  Sounds like it might create a lot more "undo" work.

In the case where that might happen, is the "undo" for it all just to uninstall the People plugin and then it goes back to where I was?

Let me know your thoughts

Thx

Doing it the way i was thinking by applying your Music folder to Artists in in plugin and doing a restore should work but is disastrous backing up to that location with all the additional artists.

Okay thanks for info.  I'll probably just proceed with the manual application.  In a way it was a plugin that kind of got me in this situation so I don't think I'll continue to chase those rabbits.  Things like Musicbrainz and AudioDB are great for folks starting from scratch and setting up a media server for the first time but when you've got years worth of content and structure that have already gone through several server iterations its a pretty big chore to fix stuff that breaks.

Thanks again for the help.

  • 2 weeks later...

Follow up question to this issue.  Do the metadata plugins (namely Musicbrainz and AudioDB) have to be installed and operating for background images and artist.nfo or artist.xml files to be applied to library objects?  I have all three (artist.nfo, artist.xml, backdrop/fanart images) all loaded to my artist music folders including the folder.jpg image.  Server is only picking up the folder images when viewing folders. I am currently loading individual artist images for artist and album artist views as indicated in previous posts.  But I also noticed that the server is not applying the backdrop images that are loaded to each of these folders either.  Nor does it show any of the information in any of the artist.nfo or artist.xml files loaded to those folders.  Is there any way to force the server to apply these images and data without having to have the metadata plugins installed? I have tried metadata refresh several times but there is no change to behavior.  The next thing I was going to try was to remove the music library from the database then re-add and let it rebuild.  But I wanted to see if there was a way to force it to apply data and files that are already there first.

A good number of these backdrop files were loaded back when I used Emby for WMC and it worked a treat.  They are all named backdrop#.jpg.  Again my file structure is <Drive>:\Music\Artist Folder\Album Folder\Album Song Files.ext.  The backdrop images and the artist.nfo/artist.xml files reside at the <Drive>:\Music\Artist Folder level.  Why will server not pick up and apply these files?

Hi, we don't currently support artist nfo files, but it's planned for the future. thanks.

Were the artist.nfo files not created by Emby? I didn't purposefully/spontaneously create the files myself.  They had to have been created by some scraping mechanism.  I do run both Plex and Emby against the same file directories so it could be that Plex or some other service created them but I personally did not create them.  In any case, the backdrop images and artist images are the thing I am most concerned about.  How to apply them without having scraper plugins turned on?  If I remove the music library and reconnect without scraper plugins installed will Emby respect both the folder and backdrop images that are already there to populate the same in the library views for the clients?

They may have been a long time ago but it's hard to associate artists with folders given the mish mash folder structures that many users will use. Therefore it has been disabled until we figure out how to handle all of that.
