Chrome Web Player won't play in PnP when you open a new Browser tab - Pixel 4 XL

So I just got a Pixel 4 XL to replace my Pixel 2 XL. Everything is great, however I noticed that when I try and play Emby in PnP and also browse the web it stops playing/working. I never had this issue before.

Is this a simple setting somewhere that I missed?

Here's a quick video to show you exactly what is going on.

Just tested to confirm my suspicions: This has to do with the browser itself and not Emby, I'd suggest you file a bug report on Chrome Android with google.

Also - since you have live tv that means you have Emby Premiere, why aren't you using the Emby Android mobile app? That would solve this issue

I just checked the Chrome versions on both the Pixel 2 XL and 4 XL. They are both the same exact version (80.xxxxx). I tried PnP on my Pixel 2 XL and it works just fine while browsing web pages, but not on the 4 XL. For the heck of it I downloaded Chrome Beta on the 4 XL (81.xxxxx). Same problem..... PnP doesn't work. What DOES work is to run Emby on Chrome Beta, minimize it, then browse the Web on Chrome stable, so I would be using 2 different browser versions simultaneously. This is fine for now but not real convenient for a long-term solution.

I have no problem filing a Chrome bug report, if it is indeed the fault of Chrome. Just need to know what to say exactly??? @@Luke ??

Sprint (maybe other ISP's too) throttles traffic when using the Emby app badly. When I use the web browser version, speeds are opened up and makes playback much more enjoyable.

You can see chatter about this here but is unrelated to this topic: https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/69333-help-getting-better-mobile-performance/

do you know of another site that uses PIP that you can compare with? they will probably want more than one example to rule out an Emby issue. Youtube does't count because they are using their own PIP function and not the browser one.

That's a great question.

I tested it eith YouTube as I was writing my first response to this thread and it behaved the same, so not an Emby issue

@@Luke - They are asking me if it's related to webview and that it's not related to Chrome Browser??? Maybe you can make a comment please!

You should report it based on Youtube, not Emby, because that's their own product and we won't have to go through the usual process of defending ourselves, building test cases for them, proving to them that it's their issue, etc.

YT isn't apples to apples though. If you play something in the browser, minimize it, then try to open Chrome again it just maximizes it full screen.

You should chime in and help me argue it's a problem on their end. Also * the topic.

Is it not enough that this happens with EVERY site that has a video player that can go in PiP? Really, any site can still go into PiP by fullscreening the video player and pressing the home button

Put a video from here in fullscreen, then click the home button to go into PiP, then try making a new tab. You'll see

There is NOTHING special about how these videos are embedded. They're using a plain HTML video element with no modifications to it. If this doesn't make it chrome's fault, I don't know what does.

The videos embedded on the page are about as barebones as it gets

UPDATE

I just got a Chrome Stable update on my Pixel 4 XL (81.0.4044.96). I checked and PiP is still not working.

I checked my current Chrome Beta (it's also 81.0.4044.96) and PiP is, oddly enough, broken there too!

PiP was working in Beta 81.0.4044.91 so now they have successfully broken it in both the Stable and Beta channels!
