Can't resume or fast forward

I have set up my server on ubuntu, with Google Drive mounted on it via rclone. Not running any rclone cache or encryption etc.

I have install Emby 1.076 on my Samsung UA55JU6600 TV

I am able to play my movies and tv shows just fine.

However, I am unable to resume after a video have been played, or even fast forward the video via the 30-seconds button.

I am able to resume and fast forward while viewing in Chrome.

Not sure how to go about diagnosing the problem, or what logs I should be providing.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

HI there, has the initial library scan completed? generally this means the server doesn't have media info for the item yet.

Yes the scan has been completed.

This only happens on my Samsung TV, and not the web browser, so I was thinking it relates more to the app, rather than rclone itself. (I could be wrong)

I just realised that this only happens to the files in this series. The other shows were okay with resuming and fast forwarding.

If you open the video in the web app, does the detail screen show a runtime for it?

Yes, using the web and the app will show the option to resume from it, but the tv app will crash once I try to resume.

Since it only happens to this particular series, I think it might be an one-off thing. Will update if I encounter such problems again.

Thanks!

Yes it sounds like the Samsung video player is having trouble with those files for some reason.

I have almost the same problem.

If the video type needed to transcode. It will not able to resume and fast forward in webapp,

but if it is direct play, it could resume and fast forward just fine.

Thanks!

Hi!

I’m trying find a good DLNA server to use on my home server and Emby seemed to be one of the best options. However, I have come across the same problem as the other users have posted about in this thread. Pressing anything except play/pause (e.g. fast forward), in my media player on my Samsung TV makes the video start over from the beginning.

I’ve also tried Jellyfin which behaves exactly the same, if that’s any help. All other DLNA servers I’ve tried (including e.g. Windows media server) works fine with the TV. The behavior is the same for all different video formats I’ve tried.

Another strange thing is that Emby transcodes the files even though I do not think that this is really necessary. The TV should be able to play at least  some of the files directly.

The TV is a Samsung QE65Q90R with software version 1374. I’m running Emby v. 4.5.4.0 on Windows 10.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Does windows media server convert the file on the fly?

Hi Luke!

Thank you for taking an interest in this issue. Actually, I’m not completely sure if Windows Media Server (the built in DLNA server in Windows, just to be clear) transcodes. I do not think so. I’ve tried the SimpleDLNA server which definitely does not transcode and using this I can stream most of my files without the issue. I’ve tried several DLNA servers and none, except Emby and Jellyfin shows the reported problem.

I tried to adjust the profile for Samsung TV in Emby to avoid transcoding, but I haven’t managed. Any suggestions on how to configure it correctly? Of course, even if avoiding transcoding would solve the problem, this is not a complete solution since I have files that the TV cannot play directly.

Ok so you have a Samsung that's a little bit on the newer side. Most of our Samsung dlna profiles are designed for older models so it's probably transcoding when it doesn't need to. We'll need to look at that.

Any suggestions on how to set up a correct profile?

If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know. Do you e.g. need any log files?

I have consistently experienced this phenomenon when playing back an active recording - a common scenario with sports, or when simply starting to watch a show in the middle of its recording session.  The Windows, XBOX and iPhone apps all work fine and I've never really pursued the errant behavior on the TV app.  However, it can be annoying.  If I play direct (no transcoding), hitting fast forward are rewind starts the recording over from the beginning.  If I turn transcoding on, then the ff/rewind media controls seem to work, assuming the transcoding has worked far enough ahead.  The "starting over from the beginning" behavior has been consistent across releases - I usually play direct by default.  I just updated to the latest beta release (.93) and that's the first version on which I've attempted to transcode and playback an active recording.

Another media control feature - the "resume" feature - is something that doesn't seem to work for active recordings, regardless of the app platform, so I assume that's a limitation on the server side (I run the Windows version).

I’m sorry for not getting back earlier. I have had to prioritize other thing the last month. I am still very interested in finding a solution though. Here are the log files obtained when playing two files; one which shouldn’t need transcoding (It plays fine using SimpleDLNA) and one which probably needs transcoding. For both files it is impossible to fast forward on the TV.

Please let me know if you need any more information or if there is anything else you would like me to test. I will try my best to get back sooner the next time.

We're working on auto-detection of supported formats which should help get more direct play, and that should help quite a bit with this.

Getting more direct play is of course good, but how does this help with the issue of not being able to fast forward? Even if this would solve the problem for files not needing transcoding, I’ve still got a lot of files that do need transcoding. Perhaps I'm missing something.

Have you tried using our Samsung app as opposed to DLNA?

Which specific problem are you referring to??  DLNA playback, or being able to resume/ff?

if it is unable to resume/ff please confirm:

  • Is this using DirectPlay, DirectStream or Transcoding?
  • Is it every file or just some files?
  • For all files that have an issue, is the playback method the same?

My suspicion is that it is only some files that you have issue with and they are DirectPlay. In addition, devices that they do playback fine on will be either DirectStream or transcode. Correct?

I have seen some files with corrupt/incorrect timing information, or seek tables that are located a the end of the file, not the start. In these cases the TV does not have sufficient information to allow seeking within the file so you can’t jump around the file during playback (ie: no resume, ff, rew)

If this is the case, then there really isn’t anything we can do. As a quick fix you could drop the playback quality down on the client playback settings to force it to transcode, or as a more permanent fix, copy the video/audio/sub streams to a new container using something like MkvToolnix if it is an mkv file.
