Slow start of movie playing when library is a mount to a remote share

Since a little while I have an issue that when I want to play a video which is a mount to another samba share in a library it takes a long time to start playing. Almost 20 seconds while this used to be almost instant but mostly 1-2 seconds.

First a small overview of my setup. I have a DS918+ with Emby server running via docker. Next I have another NAS, an XPenoloy (DS918+) which also runs an emby server via docker. Transcoding is working on both servers but as I use the EmbyTheather client on a windows 10 Intel Nuc PC transcoding is not needed as this client plays everything I have using DirectPlay.

My media is split over both NAS devices but I have made SAMBA shares from NAS to NAS to have all media accessible on both nas devices and emby servers. So in the emby libraries the media is from local folders and from smb shares. Up till a few weeks ago everything was running nicely. Playback was more or less instant when using internal LAN but also when accessing the emby server via a reverse proxy.

A few days ago I noticed that playback of one of the libraries didn't work, or at least I thought it didn't work. So I checked the SMB shares manually and everything was accessible. I checked the logging but that looked OK as far as I could see but yeah I don't think I know what to look for there.

Today I noticed that it's not that it isn't working. It's just that a takes a long time to start playing, around 20 seconds. OK, 20 seconds is not that long but if your used to almost instant playback starting it feels like ages.

In the meanwhile I did update the emby server from 4.2.1.0 to 4.4.0.40 but this didn't make a difference as was expected. I did notice emby theater got a new version but I don't know how to get the older version running again to see if maybe that is causing the issue.

Why I think this maybe has something to do with the new EmbyTheater and therefor I would like to try to see what happens with the older version. If I use the emby app from my LG TV I don't have the 20 second delay before playing. But it's just guessing form my side.

So is there a way for me to try this with the older EmbyTheater? Not sure how this could be caused by this but just want to exclude that it is the cause.

Hi there, let's look at an example. Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. Thanks !

Cleared all the logging first. Then tried to play a movie using EmbyTheater.

Noticed behavior

 - When starting the movie the loading circle was busy for like 17 seconds (roughly)

 - then the screen turned black (first a background image of the movie was shown)

 - when I enabled StatsForNerds it displayed is was playing (DirectPlaying) but still I had no image. Took like 12 (roughly) more seconds for the movie started playing.

Added all logging from the log folder.

[update]

Tried some more things. As I'm using docker it was easy to start fresh again without loosing the running one. So build everything up from scratch again. Tried it again from the newly configured emby server. Same issue. Stil takes like 20 seconds to start playing.

I tried also to play the same movie with the emby app installed on my phone (android). That one starts almost immediately playing. So it seems there is a difference in how things are handled between EmbyTheater running on windows and the android emby app?

Hi, once it finally starts playing, does it play normally? Are able to seek normally and does that happen quickly?

Hi, once it finally starts playing, does it play normally? Are able to seek normally and does that happen quickly?

Yes then everything is fine. Seeking happens quickly.

It is just the time it takes to start playing is very long. And I only see that with EmbyTheater. On my Intel NUC but also installed it on my PC and there I see the same behavior. So it's not a PC issue.

I don't see this behavior when I'm using the emby app on my android phone or LG App or the nvidia Shield App.

So it does feel like it's related to EmbyTheater. That feeling is strengthened by that I only saw this behavior after the new release of EmbyTheater. But to what is causing this behavior I have no clue.

If I need to do some more testing just let me know

Small update.

I borrowed my sis her Intel Nuc which was still running Emby Theater 3.0.6 so I could test what that version. Still my problem exists so the Emby Theater version doesn't seem to make a difference. So I still don't know why I have that delay of sometimes more then 30 seconds when playing a video. I only see this with Emby Theator on windows. With Emby clients on android and the one in my LG TV I don't have this issue which makes it the more confusing for me.

For the video I'm playing no transcoding is needed on my devices so it has nothing to do with some devices play using transcoding.

Any idea's where to look into to maybe find a solution for this?

I think I have found a solution for my issue or better a workaround.

What I changed is how I mounted my shares on my synology nas. I had it shared using smb/cifs and changed it to sharing using nfs. After this change it looks like things are working normally again.

Why this is working nfs and not working with smb/cifs I cannot explain. As I also have a nas running with emby that also uses media that are on a shared folder which is shared using smb/cifs and I haven't seen issues there. I also did check the settings of my smb configurations before just to see if there was any differences but couldn't find anything. Also have no idea why it only wasn't working for EmbyTheater on windows and I never saw the issues on my android devices life phone/tablet and nvidia shield.

In the why I'm still at a loss. But at least I have a working solution. So for anyone that runs into similar issues try changing the way how you mount your shares.
