Multi coloured screen interrupts video

I have an issue where by certain media displays a multi coloured screen for a few seconds then plays normally then shows funny colours again, it does this throughout.

 

The media affected seems to be 4K HEVC HDR

 

I am using the latest LG app on my B8.

I found some other threads on the issue, @@SamES mentioned that some HEVC video files don’t like “Direct stream” so I disabled “Allow video playback that requires a conversion without re-encoding” and now the file direct plays instead, issue is gone.

Do you know why it was streaming before? Can you attach the remux log? If it is capable of DirectPlay then it should have done that automatically anyway

So by remotely, you mean the server is on a different network to the client, correct?

 

If so, does the server have a streaming limit set? (Server Settings -> Network -> Internet streaming bitrate limit (Mbps))

 

What's the upload speed of the internet connection where the server is located?

 

In the client on the TV, during Playback, press the gear button on the bottom right-hand corner of the OSD, and check that the Playback quality is set to auto

Also have a look under Video Quality in Playback settings from the main settings page on the TV app.  Select the user icon in the top right of the home screen, then Playback and check Internet Quality.

 

Only other issue is if the app is detecting a slow connection.  Are you connected via wifi or lan cable?

@@SamES there is an "Internet Quality" setting but it appears under a "Music Quality" heading, it is set to Auto.

That may be true.  did you have transcoding off for the user when you were lookig for the quality setting?

 

If that's the case, enable all 4 Media Playback options on the server for transcoding and conversion, exit the LG app and restart it, then check for the quality setting on the OSD and confirm what it is set to.

I'm seeing a similar issue, but it's a small square of corrupted video in the top left corner, and just blank grey over the rest of the screen. I tried disabling the ability to Direct Stream, but it hasn't actually changed anything, the file is still direct streaming.

I forced a transcode by lowering the quality and the grey changed to green, no other difference.

 

Forced it to direct play by choosing the commentary track, which is a different codec. Works fine. In doing this I also discovered that when direct streaming or transcoding the chapter points are in the wrong place.

I’ve not seen transcoding cause this, only Direct Streaming. You really need to DirectPlay 4K streams in my experience

The grey screen is Direct Streaming, the green is Transcoding.

 

The weirdest thing to me is the chapter points moving.

 

It's TrueHD so it won't Direct Play, which I don't get? DTS-HD Direct Plays just fine.

 

And as I said disabling Direct Streaming in the admin settings didn't work; it continued to direct stream until I dropped the quality to below the original.

DTS-HD will play just the DTS stream without the HD component, but this is not possible with TrueHD

 

Does the file have an additional audio track that can be played without any conversion?

@@SamES I thought TrueHD worked the same way with a Dolby Digital core that DTS-HD did with its DTS core.

 

As I said it has an AC3 audio commentary, which works fine. But the chapter markers are in the wrong spot even playing the 1080p SDR version with the TrueHD track, even though it looks as though playback is fine.

 

I tried a transcode again and it's still broken, although this time it also converted it to SDR without tone mapping, whereas the transcode I tried yesterday way still in HDR. This time I got a still frame where the green is in the earlier photo, with the messed-up top left corner identical.

Unfortunately TrueHD does not work the same as DTS-HD, there is no Dolby core that can be extracted.

 

I can't really comment on chapter mark issues or the lack of tone mapping.  Maybe @@softworkz might have some thoughts

We don't do any tone mapping when transcoding, but it is planned for the future. Thanks.
