Premiere Licenses and how they work

Hello @@ebr, forgive me if this is in the wrong section.  I'm new around here, and searched a couple of different ways and couldn't find the answers I was looking for.

Here's the story:

I decided to migrate from Plex over to Emby and am in transition to do so.  My use case is a little strange, but in a nutshell I have 29 people (All family, long story) that access my Plex server regularly on a multitude of devices.  To be honest, I would say it's an average of 2-3 devices per person.  That's like 60-90 devices...  So I am a bit confused with the Licenses.  Maybe someone can answer some direct questions.

I know premiere has 25 license limit.  I also know that Samsung App, Roku App, and AppleTV App do not count against the license limit.  So that's good. However, lots of the households that connect are using FireTV Sticks.

My questions are as follows:

1) Can the devices that are capable (FireTV Stick, Android Mobile, iOS) do the app activation to alleviate some of the strain on the License limitation? (If so, how?)
2) If the answer to the above question is no, then when you purchase the "45" Licenses for $99, is that 45 Additional (giving a total of 70) or 45 total?

3) If it's 45 total, can two of these be purchased giving me a total of 90?

I think the licensing thing is probably the biggest hurdle for people thinking of switching to swallow, as Plex gives you 100 USERS and those users can use as many devices as they want.  So dealing with licenses on a per device basis is a bit of a learning curve...

That's the TLDR; if you want details, here's where we're at.  I have 9 siblings, all married, most with teenage kids.  I also have 4 parents (divorced and then both remarried).  So, I, being the geek of the family, told them about Plex and what I was using for my in-home server with my family.  However, none of them wanted to manage their own server, nor do most of them really have the bandwidth to stream remotely (which is a big deal as we're a very active out and about kind of family).  So instead of everyone running their own servers, I collected all of their BluRays, ripped em, and decided to host them all on my Plex server.  For Christmas the last 2 years, I've received nothing but hardware and movies to grow the server lol.  Any-who, I now host all of their movies in a single location, and they all have access.  But Plex is headed in a direction none of them like (Ad-Supported media, etc).  So we discussed it and switching to Emby seemed good.  However, I am fairly positive I am going to run over a 45 device limit... 70 might be alright, but 45 is going to be rough I think.  As some of the younger kids get older and acquire more devices, I can see it becoming even more of a problem.

Any help on clarification would be appreciated.

What’s the 25 license limit thing about?

Also, what if I just wanted to purchase the Xbox app without the monthly subscription?

On the apps I do purchase, can I utilize ‘downloads’?

I dont meant to hijack your thread.

Hi.  Have you seen our Knowledge Base?  It is searchable and should have answers to your questions.

Specifically, please see: Is there a limit to Emby Premiere and then let us know if you still have questions.

Also, to clear up a mis-conception - Any app that uses a Premiere feature other than the web app does count towards the limit.  The only exception to that right now is that, if you purchase the app unlock in the Fire TV or Android TV app, then that app will not count for the device limit.

Ok, so how can I facilitate this?  That would knock the amount of devices down significantly...  Before I was premiere I noticed that there was a "purchase activation" or something like that, which I did for my firetv.  Does it still exist per user on the app if I have added them via Emby Connect?

Edit:  Also, that means if I shut off trailers, downloads, and live tv from the Roku and Samsung TV's, those will also not count towards the device limit, right?

There is a purchase unlock option in the app.  However, they will need to purchase this before you add your Premiere key or when attached to another server without Premiere because we don't expose that button if you are already Premiere (I guess we need to look at that...).

Yes, that should be the case.

Yeh, that damage is already done then.  I already added my premiere key, and we don't know anyone else with an Emby server that doesn't have premiere... :-/

You can just remove it temporarily...

You can just remove it temporarily...

(I wouldn't want to lose live tv for myself for any length of time)  so with that in mind, if I add them all prior to removing the license, and then temporarily remove the key when I have one of them on the phone with me, will they be able to purchase/activate the app then?  Is there a delay I should be aware of?  And, sorry if this is a lot of questions, it's just a unique situation, and since you have no way  to purchase 70-100 licenses in a single payment/non subscription plan, this is the best I got.

Is this also valid when using live TV on ATV?

You may have to do it with each person the first time they open the app for the day because we cache Premiere status for 24 hours.

Personally, I'd wait until you have a problem (the dashboard warns you you are close to the limit) to try and go through all of this.

So, just to be clear.

If I unlock one of my clients ATV app separately (means additionally to my lifetime license) that particular device does not count towards my lifetime device limit, even if the client is using Live TV?

Wait, what?  Now this is even more confusing, lol.  Live TV Is premier only.  But you're saying that an unlocked app can use Live TV *without* counting against the Premiere?  I'm so confused...

The server must still be Premiere but we allow an unlocked Android TV app to NOT count against your device limit so that you have a way of letting people use your server without eating up your device count.

Would this also apply to iOS and Android Mobile?

Not yet.  Right now, it is only available in the Android TV/Fire TV app.

Sorry, but I have to ask:

Does this mean you are interested in adapting it to the way it works with ATV?

Then that has changed from a couple of years ago.

Live TV USED to be strictly premiere.

No exceptions and if you used Live TV it counted towards device limit.

As I indicated above, it still is.

Ok AND consumed a premiere "count" license. This has changed. When did it change?

Just be transparent.

Can you spin up a temporary no license, no media Emby server that they can use to purchase the unlock? Then you wouldn't have to alter your full-time server.

It was discussed back when I put it in - in response to people complaining about not having control over who uses their device licenses.  This is an added benefit but forget I said anything about it and just count all apps as devices if that is easier.

Best to follow my previous advice and just wait until you have an issue.  98%+ of our users do not.

I'm not complaining!

In fact I think you need to shout about it more so the people who have large user bases can take advantage.

My point is you never seem to highlight important changes like this enough, and then seem 'shady' when things come out.

Surely this was worthy of an announcement? I often highlight premiere options to new users encouraging them to buy emby. Its nice to know all the facts so we can advise them accordingly.

I wouldn't want to make such an announcement until it works system wide and, in reality, it just hasn't been a big enough problem to warrant the development time to make it work system wide.
