Playback hanging

Just got two consecutive, frozen "Scanning" screens when letting two files play uninterrupted to the end.  This didn't happen last night; haven't changed anything since then.  No crashes, though.

This thread was about crashing after deleting an item...  What is "scanning"?

It could be a separate thread if it needs to be, but often if you let a file play until the end, you get a black screen with a progress bar and the word "Scanning" above it.   But the progress bar never moves and this screen stays there until you manually hit the back button.  When it's working properly, you never see the "Scanning" screen as you're automatically returned to the menu.

Off-Topic: Not related to the delete item this thread implies. Is now discuss the problem of items hang at the end.

Do you mean "Retrieving"?

Are these AVI container? What is the container of the problem item?

The screen says "Scanning" with a progress bar--that doesn't move.  Has happened regularly in the past with both .mkv and .mp4.

Is there translation changing Retrieving to Scanning?

What does the server Dashboard show in Active devices when this happens?

It's interesting you've never seen this display I'm describing.   It wasn't happening two nights ago, but it did last night.  Trying to get it to happen tonight so I can grab a photo--but, naturally, no luck.  What's odd is that nothing obvious has changed to explain why 48 hours ago, fine, 24 hours ago not OK, tonight, back to fine.   Next time it happens, I'll grab a shot of the screen and check the dashboard.

What is the language of your Roku box?  The screen we think you are describing is from the Roku player and it says "Retrieving..."

I wonder if the frozen "Scanning" screen I've been seeing with Emby (for months) is specifically a Roku screen.  That might explain why you seem unfamiliar with it?    Still waiting for it to reappear.

Gentlemen, I stand corrected.  The hanging screen at the end of some playbacks actually says "Loading" (NOT "Scanning").

Here's the dashboard:

Don't know if it was significant, but there was about 10 seconds of black screen at the end of this file?   It's an .mkv that has reliably "hung" each time I've tested it.

Do these files that stop playing at the very end have BIF files generated for them? As a test can you delete those BIF and play after they are deleted. The player will not show the images as you navigate the transport bar of the video player. But get near the end and then let it play to the end. Does it end and then move to the next item or does this still hang even after delete the BIF?

Because it is direct playing there is very little Emby has control of. It might be(most likey is) old BIF files and you just need to delete them. The server will now regenerate correct BIF.

If this isn't related to BIF image files please let us know. I suspect you are 10 seconds off from the end and these were generated by the old Roku thumbnail plugin. Those older Roku BIF may cause problems.

The new BIF images the server generates are both faster to complete and correct where the old was anything but. Let us know what you find. Thanks. :)

I don't think I've ever heard of, nor encountered a .bif file!  ;-)   Certainly never seen one in my media folders.  I've only got the following file-types:  .srt, .mkv, .nfo, jpg.  Unless I'm supposed to look somewhere else.   Is there a roku folder or something similar I'm not aware of?

If you enabled any thumbnail generation on the server, then it creates a .bif file.

When you FF or Rew during playback, do you get any images to scroll through or just the transport bar?

I just get the transport bar.   Thumbnails might be handy--but I have no memory of where that option is on the server.   I guess that's why I've never seen a .bif file.

[edit]  OK.  Found the setting.  Sure enough, when I enable it, I get .bif files.  But they didn't exist before, so probably played no part in this "Loading" issue.  I'll test the same file in a bit to see if having the .bif file present makes any difference.

[2nd edit]  The file still hangs at the end of playback with or without the presence of a .bif file.

Are you playing just this one file?  If not, are you sure it is hanging at the end of this one and not the beginning of the next?
