Tiny Subtitles With MKV

Hey,

Thanks for your guys hard work. Emby is always a pleasure to use. I've noticed that when playing files with embedded subs, like the MKV format, the default size is tiny. Unreadable basically.

When I extract the subs into an .srt file ( ffmpeg -i "%~1" "%~n1.eng.srt" ) it works fine, loading the subs as expected.

Any chance Emby could work with this better automatically?

Thanks

Hi.  I'd be interested in seeing a picture of this but we don't control the display of the subs.  That is handled by the Roku.  You may want to check for any settings in the device itself.

Sometimes it is though :) In this case the Roku video player handles it all for us.

Can you provide a sample video for testing?

No, I have a movie that's MKV. I've had this issue with other MKVs, too. And that specific file shows the same issue, I tested it too.

My Roku displays subtitles for anything else just fine. Large and comfortable. So it's not the Roku.

Here's a pic with the MKV normally loaded subs, and then one with the subs extracted into an SRT file:

Stream #0:2(eng): Subtitle: subrip (default)

I think your first image is subs being burned in by the server and the second one is the Roku rendering them.

Is there an ffmpeg log from your first image?

@@speechles can you try to reproduce the issue with that mkv? Thanks.

Sure. It looks like this is related to MOV_TXT. I do not have the issue with SUBRIP. Those properly show up as do SRT. It is only MOV_TXT which appear to have an issue when selected. They properly show in the subtitle picker menu debug as selected and are properly being set as the selectedSubIndex. The problem is somewhere in the loading routine when the subtitle requested in selectedSubIndex is pulled up while loading the content to play. I can chase this down more and figure out exactly where it is dropping the ball. The MOV_TXT do not display. This is an issue.

As far as size of the subtitles the Roku only does text for subtitles. It has one size you set. This size and more can be modified in the Roku subtitle settings (not Emby settings). Whatever you set for the Roku subtitle settings all of the apps on your Roku will adopt and use.

The small/tiny text for subtitles looks like the server is burning these in. It might be scaling up the video but not scaling up the subtitles with it? Difficult to tell without seeing the ffmpeg generated at the same time.

I can confirm again that my settings for Roku subtitles is big and comfortable. Other apps display subs correctly with those settings. Anything tiny is strictly from emby having difficulties with these kind of subs in MKVs. Thanks.
