Help me pair a GTX1660 to a CPU/RAM/MOBO

I already have a nVidia GTX 1660 scheduled to be delivered today, so the current parts list for my nee Emby server build is as follows:

 

- 500GB Samsung EVO 860 SSD

- ZOTAC nVidia GTX 1660 GPU

- Windows 10 Home

 

I guess I now need suggestions for the following:

 

- CPU

- MOBO

- RAM

 

This will be strictly an Emby server, as my Synology 1019+ NAS will store all my movie libraries.

That's a good option. Don't forget to use a separate SSD for a transcode drive. You're going to have a lot of temp files, you don't want them filling your primary drive. I use an M.2 drive.

I already have the (2) 250GB NVMe drives. I will pull them out of my Synology NAS where I was using them as a r/w cache, which of course, I think was overkill for my current usage. And I also have the Samsung 860 EVO SSD.

 

I guess I can use all 3 SSDs on the setup, correct?

 

BTW, I an going to go with 32GB 3200mhz RAM. This server will also serve as my daily usage PC, so doesn't hurt to have the additional RAM, I guess.

I don't think you need more than 16Gb of RAM. It is all about Cores now, more RAM isn't going to change things.

 

I use my new build for everything now too, decommissioning my trusty i5 4690k Devil's Canyon just this past weekend. I run BlueIris, MCEBuddy with ComSkip and HandBrake as well as numerous other processes to keep my library full..

 

This new build does it all with only 16Gb RAM. Before, for example, BlueIris would take maybe 35% to 50% of CPU, now it is like 3%. I'm doing four simoultaneous conversions using MCEBuddy but set that to use on half of my available threads. When it is converting video my CPU spikes to maybe 60% to 70% with the other processes going on but it converts from mpeg2/ts to HEVC/mkv in way less than half the time it used to.

 

Emby transcoding? I don't even notice that..

 

I do use a 1Tb m.2 NVMe drive for my recording and transcoding but MCEBuddy moves the mkv's off to my DrivePool Library, leaving the original ts in a Archive Folder for 14days whereupon a *.bat script is run each day from Task Scheduler to delete the older recordings. This takes up a surprising 400Gb of drive space. Thank goodness for MCEBuddy to compress and move them and for my Ryzen to do it in short order without disrupting anything else going on with Emby Server.

Yea, I guess you are right. I'll just get 16GB DDR4 3200. Heck, compared to my current 8 GB DDR3 2400, I can't complain.

 

I'll go ahead and pull the trigger on the list I posted above, but opting for 16GB RAM instead of 32GB RAM.

I went with used from Amazon Warehouse for the MoBo and saved a bunch of money. It wasn't even out of the magnetic shielding plastic. Hardly used.

Hey Sammy, have you tested how quick the Ryzen will burn in subs? That's something I'm curious about :)

 

No I haven't. I usually leave them as srt or they're already in the mkv when I rip using MakeMKV. For recordings, MCEBuddy strips the Closed Captions out as part of the conversion process and that process is WAY faster now, I mean 4 or 5 times faster.

BTW, that's a full ATX MoBo. Make sure it fits in your case.

I have (2) 250GB M.2 NVMe SSD and (1) 500GB Samsung 860 EVO SSD.

 

How should I set them up?

 

Both M.2 drives in RAID0 as boot drive and the SSD as a separate drive for all transcoding and caches?

 

This will be my first dual-M.2 mobo and not sure if they can even be setup as RAID0.

I'd use the m.2 for boot and possibly transcoding and the SSD for recording if you do live TV. If that's a yes, then use MCEBuddy to move them to your NAS. If no then use it for transcoding.

No, I don't do Live TV recording.

 

Should I just setup the two m.2 as RAID1 instead? I will not keep anything that needs to be backed up on it, that's what I have the NAS for, but it would be nice to have some redundancy in the event one of the m.2 fails and saves me the headache of having to re-install everything.

 

The SSD I will definitely use it for transcoding. [emoji1360]

Installing RAID on the boot drive is beyond me but why not just create a system image.. which reminds me that now that mine is settled in it is probably time to make that image.

NVMe 1 has the full Windows and programs installations

NVMe 2 is currently empty.

 

Should I point all 3 of the above paths to NVMe 2 and call it a day?

If you're planning to have 10+ users on your server, you'll need a chunk of space for live tv buffering and transcoding. I would suggest using the empty NVMe drive only as the transcode path. As for cache, I left mine at default, but some of these guys seem to prefer having that separate. I see you didn't take my suggestion of using your 500GB SSD for the transcode drive. If you did that, you could the other M.2 for a cache drive. That might speed up metadata load times, a little.

Hmmmm either I forgot reading that or missed it.

 

I will install that SSD right now.

 

So is this how it all should be setup?

That should work. Keep an eye on the cache drive for space. Very large collections could fill that.

I'll definitely keep an eye open on that drive.

 

BTW, I noticed that when playing a Live TV stream, the transcode drive starts filling up with videos of the live feed.

 

I guess Emby deletes those files once the feed is closed or something?

 

I'm new to all this and want to understand what's going on.
