Unable to exit Emby app using USB keyboard

I'm running the latest (Emby 1.7.78g Registered) running on a Shield (8.0.2).  Running Emby on a Shield has been my set up for years.

Just today, I updated Emby to the version mentioned and Shield form 8.0.1 to 8.0.2.  Now when I'm in Emby, I am unable to exit to the Shield home screen.  I'm using a Harmony remote (and also a Harmony USB keyboard).  The "Exit" button on the remote (and ESC button on the keyboard) used to exit Emby to the Shield home screen.  Emby responds to those keys when in menus to get back to the Emby main screen, but pressing exit (and again and again) doesn't get me back to the Shield home screen.  Holding Exit down does cause a "Returning Home..." dialog to come up, but all it does is refresh the Emby main screen.

The exit button works fine to exit YouTube and other apps, so this seems specific to Emby.

I have another 8.0.2 Shield running the latest Emby (it self-updates), and it has the same problem.  That Shield is using a Logitech USB keyboard.

Thoughts?

Thanks for the quick response.  The original remote is a game controller, so there isn't a "back" or "exit" button.  I'm not even sure what button does what on that thing.

Has Emby changed the keyboard controls with the latest release?

It is the "B" button.

No.  Something perhaps has changed in the Shield firmware update with regards to how these key presses are passed through though.  What if you map your harmony exit button to the Shield "back" command?

The Exit button is mapped to the ESC key of a keyboard for a few years.  Works with all other apps on 8.0.2, and works within Emby to get back to the Emby main screen.

Is there a keyboard shortcut for the Emby android app that exits the app?

The "back" key on the remote control.  Can you not map it properly to that function?

The app doesn't actually govern this behavior.   The Android System does and, perhaps, they are now responding to "Escape" (something that no one with the normal setup would have) differently.

The remote control is bluetooth.  My Harmony setup is using FLIRC, which is USB-based and can't read inputs from bluetooth.

My other Shield/Emby setup is not using a Harmoney system - just a wireless USB keyboard.

It's odd that ESC works in other apps to return from menus and exit the app, and within Emby to return from menus, but just not exiting Emby.

Is there a way I could install the prior version of Emby (sideload) to see if this is due to 8.0.2 or the latest Emby?

The transport protocol should not matter.  You should still be able to map the button to the Shield->back button.

And yes, it is quite odd.

I had an anecdotal experience yesterday that may or may not be related.

My shield entered the Netflix app on startup for some reason (not sure if maybe the remote hot key got accidentally pressed or what) and, as you may or may not know, Netflix blocks exiting their app with the back button.  You have to choose the "Exit Netflix" menu option on their side menu.

I clicked on that option about 10 times and the app simply would not exit.  I had to use the remote "Home" button to get back to the device home.  Sounds similar, huh...?

I'm hesitant to re-do everything without using a FLIRC as the setup has been working well for years.  FLIRC works by mapping a button to a "learned" frequence.  But it works over RF, not bluetooth.

Familiar, yes.  Netflix worked for me (by select Exit Netflix).

Any chance I can download the prior Emby Android App to try it out?

Thanks for the suggestion.  I'll try that when I get home.

I did clear the cache last night (didn't help), but didn't clear data (was lazy and didn't want to re-enter login, settings, etc).

Clearing cache and data did not help.

Emby is still the only app (on my Sheild) that doesn't close (or prompt to close) when using the ESC key on a USB keyboard.  That list includes Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, VUDU, PLEX, HGTV Go, Amazon Music, and Pandora.

Can I get an older version of Emby to see if that works?

I use a Harmony Elite and a virtual bluetooth keyboard to the nvidia. The back button works fine - I never use Exit so cannot comment. I updated to 8.0.2 a few days ago with no changes.

Thanks.  My struggle is with the ESC key of a USB keyboard.

If you navigate to the "Favorites" tab on the home page and then hit your exit or whatever key you're using for back, what happens?

Will try it out tonight...

If I press the ESC key while Favorites is highlighted, it goes to the list of Favorite items.  Pressing ESC again goes back to the Emby main menu.

Rather odd behavior.

Any luck providing access to a prior Emby apk?

Okay, then your description tells me that our processing of the Esc key (when we look for it) is working properly and it must be something in Android that is behaving differently.

Very soon, we will be adding an exit confirmation screen to the app and, by virtue of us then needing to do special processing in this case, it will probably solve this issue for you.

Well, that didn't take long!  1.7.92g fixed the issue.  When I press "Exit" (which sends a keyboard escape), I now see the "Exit Emby?" menu.  Thanks!
