2 regressions in the Roku client folder view

Hi recent versions of the emby roku client have introduced 2 regressions in the user interface using folder view IMHO.

Firstly it is not immediately clear what is a folder and what is a file. There is a tiny icon in the corner of each thumbnail - both of which look remarkably similar. The roku client used to show a clear distinction betrween folders and files. Folders were shown as folders. Now it is completely unobvious what is a folder.

Secondly the name of items used to be underneath the item itself (as is still the case in my web browser). But now on the roku client the name of the item is only shown on the top of the screen.

These are 2 major usability issues IMHO.
The roku emby client used to be a pleasure to use. Now I find it confusing. Am I looking at a file? Am I looking at a folder? What is the file/folder called? I want to be able to know the answers to these questions instantly.

Please, please fix this emby!

Hi there, how does this compare to the web app? Do you find it easy to distinguish in the web app?

As far as the distinguishing folder issue, the web app is just as bad as the Roku app (but I do all my viewing on the roku app). The icon identifying folders from items is tiny and both look almost identical.

Ideally I'd like folders to actually look like folders - just like on an operating system. So that navigation is smooth easy and painless as it once used to be.

They are at least consistent thought right?

The lack of knowing what is a folder is consistent yes (so not specific to the roku client).

But the writing issue is roku client specific.

Sorry I made a mistake as I was away from my roku. The Roku app is worse than the web app. The web app at least has a tiny icon in the corner to distinguish folder vs video (even if both icons look the same). But the roku literally has nothing to distinguish between folder and video. Folder and videos both look *exactly* the same.

IMHO both are really bad from a design / usability point of view. There is a reason every operating system out there represents folders pretty much the same way - because it is intuitive. If this could be fixed it would be a  great leap forward!

Hi.  Please try the beta version of the Roku app.

Thanks I gave it a try. Great to have the option to choose where the description is displayed. Could the font be made bigger by any chance? (about 20% bigger would be ideal). Many thanks! p.s. see my reply above this one re: folders and files being indistinguishable on the roku app.

If you delete the auto generated images for your folders, I believe you will get the display you want in both apps.

You mean in the top left corner there are little grey circles with folder icons inside them? The Roku is missing these presently. But not for long. ^_~

Tried it and it didn't do anything sadly. Exactly the same.

Can you show us what you are seeing?  If the folders have no image, they should get a default that looks just like a folder.

Hi, sorry for my late reply. I spent ages trying to bug-test this and wondered why it wasn't working for me. Got rid of my cache. Re-installed emby etc. Then I realized that this only works on empty folders. Anything with a video file in it will show up as before (i.e. a thumbnail of a video with no indication it is a folder). Empty folders show for me exactly like the screen-shot you posted above, but only empty folders do this.

Also although the above does indeed show a folder icon (even if it only works for empty folders right now), ideally one would want both an indication that it is a folder and an indication of what is inside the folder. Showing the image specified by the file Folder.{png/jpg} would be ideal (as happens at the moment but without any indication it is a folder).  So an image inside a folder would be ideal. Just a folder icon would be 2nd best, but maybe a nicer-looking / bigger icon?

Many thanks!

If you have your videos inside individual folders, then we do not consider those folders.  We interpret that scenario as a single movie because that is the standard way many people store their movies.

If you put two videos or any other folders inside that folder, you should get a "folder" display for it.  The folders in my image above are not empty - they are the top level folders for my entire movie library.

We are adding the small indicator for folders to the Roku app.

That is a good & sensible option.

Ok I just figured out the problem. On my server I select "Home Videos and Photos" as the default media type. I don't choose the "Movies" type because the thumbnails it produces are the wrong size. If I create a new folder and stick a couple of files in there, it displays as a "folder" if I set the type to "Movies", but it displays as a preview thumbnail if I set the type to "Home Videos and Photos".

We are adding the small indicator for folders to the Roku app.

Ok that is a step in the right direction.

Many thanks!
