Slow scan for tv shows

Good morning. Strangely, Emby is taking too long to load the web interface. It is installed on an ASustor AS1002T NAS. It is also taking too long to restart, to enter the options, practically no task is being accessed quickly, even by the internal network. Sometimes it works well, at other times the problem described. I configured the server to run the scheduled tasks during the night, just like the NAS. And the NAS has the same apps installed since I purchased it: Sonarr, Radarr, Deluge, Emby. How to solve?

ps: the speed of my internal network is approximately 70 MBps. The NAS is Gigabit, the computer too, but I'm using a cable that doesn't reach the maximum connection speed.

Server version: 4.3.1.0

How long is too long?

Several minutes, when the interface loads something. Sometimes it only loads the "Movies", "TV Shows" and "Collections" sections, not loading the latest episodes or movies from the library, nor the next episodes. And it is slow to enter Settings or any other section in the management part of the server, when it enters the option. Often it is just loading and nothing happens.

Good Morning. I'm having trouble scanning my libraries, it's taking forever to do the whole process. Emby is installed on a NAS Asustor AS1002T, I have a library of Movies and another one for TV Shows. The movie library has almost 1300 files, each separated in a different folder (/Movies/movie_title (year)/movie_title (year).ext). The library of tv shows has about 20 thousand files, separated by series and seasons (/TV/tv_serie (year)/season_xx/tv_serie_sxxexx_episode_name.ext/), totaling 393 series. For the movies, I configured the scan to use TMDB and FanArt and disabled subtitles search (I download subtitles manually for the movies). For the TV series I configured the scan to use TMDB, TVDB, FanArt and ScreenGrabber and I also disabled subtitles search (I intend to enable it for new content). I disabled the generation of nfo files and also uninstalled all plugins that did not interest me. The scanning of the films was even fast, it took about 1 hour, although I did not find the metadata for everything (my mistake, some files have a localized name). The series library advanced rapidly to 86.4% and then slowly, during the night, to 90.3% and stopped there. It's been a few hours. What is the problem and what can I do to speed up the process? Would Emby support local information? I was thinking about doing the previous scans using Media Elch or Tinny Media Manager and, somehow, importing into Emby. It's possible?

Server version: 4.4.0.13

Hi there, can you please attach the emby server log? We can provide some advice on what features to disable for faster scans.

Would Emby support local information?

We already do support local nfo files and images, but we will still try to supplement with internet metadata unless you turn it off.

OK a few things i would suggest:

  • If you've configured the email plugin to send emails, try uninstalling that plugin and restarting the server. This will be trying to send out emails as new items are discovered during the scan and will result in longer scans.
  • Try turning off subtitle downloading just to speed up the initial scan of importing the content into your library. Then you can always turn it back on later and the subtitle scheduled task will search for subtitles on existing content already imported.
  • You enabled MovieDb for episodes, this is considerably slower than Tvdb because with MovieDb we have to send individual http requests to MovieDb for each episode. With Tvdb we get metadata for the entire series all at once and as a result it is considerably faster. That's why MovieDb is off by default for episodes.

I uninstalled the notification plugin, disabled TMDB for the series and disabled subtitles. I restarted the scan. Post the result later.

ps: is there any way to optimize ffprobe? It seems to me that the collection of information about the archives is not very efficient.

We're always looking at that but i'm not sure there's really a way to optimize it other than potentially just not doing it.

, disabled TMDB for the series

make sure it's disabled for episodes as well. In fact, keeping it enabled for series is probably fine because obviously there's far fewer series in your library than episodes.

It's still slow. Running 0.1% every hour. Horrible! Wouldn't stopping the scan and manually update each series more efficient?

No, I would just give it time and allow it to finish. If you can provide a new server log i can provide more advice. Thanks.

I disabled all possible applications on the NAS (Plex, Sonarr, Bazarr) to see if that helps Emby. What leaves me intrigued is that the consumption of NAS resources is not large, about 17% cpu only. I think ffmpeg and ffprobe could be more efficient, use more resources when they exist.

It took 24 hours to finish. Disabling notifications and changing the metadata browser helped. However, I don't know if the time spent was normal or I am having a problem with the NAS.

Answer me one thing: can having another media server running affect the performance of the emby? I have the emby and plex running on the same NAS (to test them) and I realize that both run very poorly, on the remote connection. Emby takes time to load the web interface, load the categories, etc. Plex loses the remote connection all the time and displays the message that the server settings are unavailable and that the library cannot be loaded. I'm traveling and I can't test how they behave on the home network.

This sounds normal, I wouldn't say you have any issues.  I have about that many series on my beta server and it takes about that long to build that library with everything disabled, and about twice as long to build the interval images.

If it is idle probably not. It just depends on what resources it is using.

There are many instances of Plex running at the same time but the RAM and CPU usage are 70% and 20%, respectively, at most.
