for 4k hdr video file playback i've been testing various external player options (mpc-be, mpc-hc, potplayer, etc.) + madvr (hdr passthrough / let madvr decide) as well emby's integrated mpv player (which has come a long way thanks to the efforts of  @Doofus and others), but very recently i stumbled across potplayer's hdr pixel shader options and i have to say they're (comparatively) pretty impressive imo.

out of the box it gives solid results and, coupled with easy access picture filter controls (contrast, brightness, gamma, saturation, etc) plus what appears to be lighter cpu/gpu load demands than madvr, it's looking very promising, at least for my needs... looking forward to testing it some more, also interested in some of the avisynth motion plugiins.
