Emby Theater unwatchable

Not sure what may have happened, but when watching Emby Theater on a client PC on the home network (it's not on the same PC as the server), but starting today, whenever I try to play anything, as soon as I press play, the video starts for a few seconds, flips to the desktop, the comes back, then goes to the desktop, comes back then says Playback Error and something about no streams currently available.  It does this for ANY media I try to play via Emby Theater.  It's basically crashing all the time.  Tried the standard restart and reboot stuff..

It's v.3.0.10

Not sure if this is related but all media information screens on Emby Theater are halfway down the screen...kinda of weird looking.  In the attached screenshot, there seems to be more "space" at the top of the screen.  Using Emby Theater just yesterday showed the media information closer to the top of the screen...(hope this all makes sense, lol)

It's been a setup I've had for some time now, so nothing has changed hardware-wise.  I did, however, update my NVidia GeForce driver to the latest version.

Just to make sure it isn't something with the server, I went and logged in and played media via a browser and everything plays just fine, no failures

No problem, here they are.  Yeah it is completely unwatchable. I can't use ET at all, it crashes every time.

I closed Emby Server, cleared all the logs from the directory, restarted Emby Server, went to the client PC, opened ET and tried to play Zombieland Double Tap, and it looks like it crashed 3 times, then gave me the Playback Error.

Thanks folks for the assist.

Anybody have any idea where I might start looking in order to fix this?  I have a feeling like it may be something related to that recent driver update I did for the video card, but even rolling back doesn't solve the issue.  I can't watch anything at the moment...

Thanks again.

I had a similar issue the other day. Suddenly, Theater would keep locking up, and I'd have to force close, but it just kept happening. I did a clean install, and that rectified it. Uninstall Theater and remove all traces, then re-install, see if that works.

Try sharing the files over the network and then configuring the optional network path in emby library setup. this may help Theater to play more efficiently. You can learn more on our wiki:

https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Library-Setup#library-paths

I do that already. Keep in mind this is an entirely new problem.  No changes were made to the server or how I watch media via ET on that PC other than upgrading the driver.

Just tried this...no bueno.  Still does it

I can't watch anything at all via ET, it has now become 100% useless...is there some sort of setting I am missing?  It only does this within Emby Theater, no other player causes this.

Any help?  Was there anything in the logs I posted that showed any anomalies?  Whats also weird is that all the media info on any item is way down, almost halfway down the page.  Like there is too much space on the top...

I don't think you do that based on your log. The theater machine must no longer have direct access to the path.

You mean like this?  If so, I've had my server setup like that for ages.  What I'm trying to say is, I literally made no changes to the server and ET is now failing.  It only did that after I did the driver update.  But I am not sure if that is simply coincidence or if there is some correlation.  I keep trying to tell you that the layout of the screen is odd as well.  Something changed within the last 2 days.  It could very well be my system and not ET, but I am trying to figure why this is only happening to ET.

The family can watch no media via ET a this point.  I can watch media via Emby through the web browser, but that isn't conducive for the kids.

Is there a particular reason why 3 FFMPEG transcode logs were generated for that one instance of media I attempted to play?  It seems coincidental that it crashes 3 times and then gives that playback error.

Is there some way I can tell if the client PC has lost direct access to those paths?

Yes look at the path displayed at the bottom of the web app detail screen for a video. Now go to the client machine and enter that path into windows explorer.

OK, I know what you are saying, I have those drives mapped to the client machine as well.  I was already saying that I can directly play those media files via VLC and WMP on that client machine via the network with no issues.

OK, looks like I can't upload an mp4 video file that is only 44MB in size.  Is there another method I can show this video?

Try not using mapped network drives and instead use the original network location.

I think we are getting way off base here.  I have had this setup for ages with no issues, then 2 days ago, with no changes to the server, no server updates and no ET updates, it now begins to fail...what happened?  the only change I made was update the nvidia driver on the client PC

wait, if the drive is not mapped...it won't find it becasue all media is located on the server..not the client PC...I don't think I understand what you are trying to say..

OK, created a google drive file that I have a public shared link...feel free to check it out to see what I am experiencing.  Once I pressed play, everything you see happening was occurring without me providing any input whatsoever, no mouse clicks, no keyboard strokes, etc.

Notice how low on the screen the media information is.  That is new and looks unusual.  It wasn't like that before.
