Roku App Exits after I Delete a TV Recording

I record a lot of TV shows from my antenna with Emby. After I finish watching one, I delete it. I don't care to save them. With the Roku app, after I delete a recording, the app almost always performs the deletion, briefly flashes back to the list of recordings available and then exits to the Roku home screen. I don't know if Emby crashes or just exits. It seems quite consistent in doing this when I am deleting the last recorded episode of a show, and that is the most common scenario for me. It has seemed inconsistent when I am deleting an episode other than the last for a show. It's not a huge deal obviously, but I have to restart the app and navigate back to watch another recording. Otherwise the app works great for me. I guess deletion would not be that common for most types of media, so maybe this problem would not be so evident.

I should note that the app has improved a great deal since I first started using it. This is the only remaining problem I keep experiencing.

Thanks

1. Are these recordings showing in a season?

2. Can you give a screen shot of the screen giving you the crash? Any camera will do. Crop as needed.

3. If you delete from the detail view. Is it only when delete the very last episode of that series/season that causes the crash?

4. Does it crash immediately after you use delete or do you need to press back first or any other action?

Is it possible for you to give us steps to replicate exactly. I have tried to get this to happen but I must not be doing it exactly as you are.

If you give us exact steps to replicate then disregard those 4 questions above. Those are just from me wondering how to exactly replicate the crash. Thanks. :)

Soon as I hear back from you this issue takes priority #1. No rush just eager to solve this. Thanks again.

I do see an issue where it is possible the series ID may no longer exist and the app was depending on it. It is obviously where we are assuming a field/parameter will exist when it no longer does. It is an easy fix just difficult to pin the tail on this donkey. To where exactly this crash happens.

Hi speechles,

Thank you for your quick response and I'm sorry for my slow one. Things have been a bit hectic here lately.

OK, there is nothing unusual about what I was doing. I enter Emby, select TV Recordings and then select a particular recording one of two ways:

.

1)  I scroll down to latest recordings and select one to watch. When I finish, I back out of the playing video and select delete from the options offered. Typically the screen showing the latest shows flashes on again for a very short time, and the program exits to the Roku home screen. In all cases, the delete has actually worked. The recording is gone when I reenter the app.

2) I select Shows from the options near the top of the page, scroll down to one in the list, select it, play the video, back out of it, ...

But I do have more information. I am at home now, but when I experience the problem, I am at another location, accessing my Emby server remotely. My home network is very fast. The remote location network is adequate but much slower. I use the same model Roku at both locations, accessing the same server - locally or remotely. The problem is not happening at my home. It happens much more often then not at the other location. I have an idea about what may be causing it. The deletion undoubtedly takes longer to report back to the Roku app at the secondary location, maybe quite a bit longer. Might the Roku app be exiting because it doesn't get the deletion confirmation back quickly enough from the remote server? If that could be the problem, perhaps you could give it a bit more time. Unfortunately, I will not be in a position to test at the remote location again for some time, but I think this may explain why you don't see the failures.

There are a couple other issue I have noticed in my testing. If you prefer that these be in separate postings, just say the word, and I will re-post them.

1) At both locations, if the deletion is successful and the app doesn't exit, the image for the show that was deleted remains in the list. In the majority of cases, I have just deleted the last recording of that show. If I re-select the show in the app, the app hangs spinning until I back out of it. When I come back in, the show is gone from the lists. (I am oversimplifying a bit here. Emby sometimes completely removes the show from the lists after the last recording is deleted and sometimes leaves it in the show list (not the latest list), even though there are no currently available recordings. I am theorizing that the choice is based on whether the show is set to record the series instead of just a one off showing. If that's true, it's actually quite clever and nothing less than I would expect from these genius developers.)

2) If for any media, the list of available entries (movies, TV recordings, etc.) is longer than one row, the right arrow will scroll sequentially through the list, properly jumping to the first entry in the next row when I scroll past the end of the current row. However, the back arrow behavior has a small bug. If I am on the first entry of a row and scroll back, the first press of the back arrow does not highlight the last entry of the row above. No entry is highlighted. It's as though the "cursor" disappears from the screen. One more press of the back arrow will highlight the last entry of the previous row properly. A very small thing but anomalous.

Thank you for your help.

If you're talking about the original problem, I would be glad to do so, but as I said, I haven't been able to make it fail where I am now, and I won't be back where it failed for some time. If you mean the other two issues as well, I can test those now.

Thanks

Is the letter jump list visible on the screen?

Well, that was exactly the right question to ask me on this issue. No, the letter jump list was not visible. I don't think I had ever seen it on the Roku app, and I didn't know there was supposed to be one. My lists were sorted by name ascending, as they almost always are, but the jump list was not there. However the scrolling acted as though it were. I looked for an option to turn on the jump list. Of course, there isn't one. So I tried changing the sort order to something else and then back to name. Now the jump list appears when it should and not when it shouldn't, and scrolling back from the first entry on any row positions to the jump list if it's there and to the last entry of the previous row if it isn't. Now all the scrolling works as I believe you expect.

There remains the question of why the jump list was not already appearing, though the scrolling acted as though it were there. Also, the behavior still seems a bit inconsistent, as scrolling forward from the last entry on a row does not go to the jump list if it is present. Whether it should is somewhat questionable, I suppose, but when I'm doing it, it does seem a bit odd.

Thanks

What does this thread have to do with the original problem? When I delete the Emby app on my Roku TV it doesn't delete. Please resolve this.
