If Emby disapeared...

Let me say first I’ve bought a year ago a lifetime sub for Emby and absolutely not regretting it. I’ve still got Plex as a backup but it’s no longer in use.

So:

I don’t know what form Emby has, is it a legal entity an llc or whatever? But my basic question is: if Emby disappeared, or was taken over, whatever, what would I be exactly left with (i.e. non premium stuff). A server and an html player yes? All the transcoding stuff and user management is premium?

Is Emby doing anything to mitigate this kind of worst case scenario for its lifetime users?

Just asking. Thanks, Steve

PS sorry if I missed this in an FAQ somewhere.

Barring a nuclear strike taking out the whole Eastern seaboard of the U.S. if it came to a point where we were not able to continue supporting the platform for whatever reason, I think we would make our best efforts to leave you with something usable.

However, some features may be impossible to continue to function if we aren't here to support them (think metadata providers changing APIs etc.).

Luckily, we don't plan on going anywhere :).

P.S. For clarification transcoding and user management are NOT Premiere only features.

That is the answer I knew we'd hear. @@ebr has been at this for a long time starting with MediaBrowser in WMC and @@Luke joined up, what, 6 years ago now. You guys are highly dedicated to the success of this project. It is not just a job it is a PASSION. It bleeds from you day in and day out..

Sorry, I didn't mention all the other dedicated developers but there's quite a team behind this project. I'm happy to be a member and user!

Given the rate at which technology evolves I believe that it is unlikely that the current computing methodology and platforms will even exist in 20 years. It is even possible that just ten years from now Emby, in a form that is recognizable by most current users, will not exist. There is nothing nefarious about this it is just technological change.

The "computer" as we know it has existed in a form that is recognizable by most for a pretty short time and it is reaching the edge of possibility for its current form.

I do not doubt that Emby will "last" as long as there are computers close in function to what we have today but there are so many ways the technology could change what will happen in even 10 years is nearly impossible to be answer. Personally: I am holding out for the direct neural interface with no need for all the wires and other "accessories" we have today.

In any case I am quite sure Emby will outlast me so I am not worried at all about Emby's future. ;)

Hi ebr

I dont know US law, but under UK law it would be possible to constitute the memo and articles to legally provide a level of comfort to users in this type of situation.

Yes everything breaks in the end but I’d like to know Emby are doing what they can to ensure that if the key can no longer be validated, because the validation server is gone, that what I have will continue working at its current level.

That would mean a commitment to lifetime users written into the constitution of the company.

Maybe this sounds extreme but my experience tells me that shit happens!!!

Well just a thought from my side.

Apologies for not having properly researched what the premium key buys me.

And as a PS this is not meant at all as any reflection on the commitment of the team. I see this every day and it’s a major reason why I’m here.

Steve

Enjoy what you have and stop worrying about it. BTW, this is covered under U.S. laws and I'm pretty sure doesn't cover anything near what you may have in the U.K. or Europe. Generally in the U.S., "Lifetime" in this instance means the lifetime of the product itself. You get to use it as long as it is still there. When it is gone, it is gone. If you're worried about it you can always use Plex or Jellyfin or JRiver assuming they are still around too.

Well said Ebr!

Just for the record, if my memory serve me right, The idea start it in late 2010, coding/testing on 2011, general for all in 2012, so it 8 years for general now.

If you really want to go back, i've been a user since it was still called 'Video Browser' and soley developed by a fellow Aussie, Sam.

So who did the media browser standalone app? ebr?  Or was it Redshirt? That's what I used. I still have a copy of it :)

You did not read my post right, I meant here the "Emby" project history, and how it start it, the idea based on Emby as server.

Frankly this is a lot of nonsense and completely misses the point. If you can’t be bothered to read what I actually wrote as opposed to what you think I wrote, it’s just very tiring.

I’m not asking anything different here to what I ask software suppliers in my professional life.

But: oh well

What I'm saying is that I think you get your money's worth out of lifetime in a year or less so the rest is s gift.. enjoy it. If it goes away.. adapt.
