Move server files to external HDD?

Hello,

I once used the Plex server for Shield and it had an option to move the server files to an external HDD since there’s not a lot of space in the Shield.

I’m now using Emby on the Shield for when I travel and I’m working on setting it up and it just became completely non-responsive. I’m wondering if that’s because there’s not a lot of space on the internal Shield storage. Is there a way to put the server files on an external drive or at least the parts that would take up a lot of space? Where/how would I go about doing that?

Thanks so much in advance!

Yes there's the server cache, metadata and transcoding temporary files settings that you could consider changing to your external drive.

Great! Do I have to manually specify the location for each one of these? I’m having trouble finding them all within the settings. Sorry about that. :(

I found transcode, conversions, and cache but have yet to find the area where I specify the location for metadata and that could be a larger one. Where is that?

Secondly, will Emby automatically copy what was originally put into the default locations over to the new ones on the external drive or do I need to do that myself? I’m just concerned that I don’t want those files to be left on the interior storage since there’s not much room - I want to be sure to free up what I can.

It won't copy anything when you change it but you only need to do that for the metadata setting. So perhaps just try the other two for now and see if that helps.

Three questions:

1) For some reason, the Cache won’t save. It just spins and spins and spins (for 2 hours now). I tried to move to another link to see if it had saved it and it doesn’t. I’ve tried a few times now. It won’t save even though the server is running. Any ideas?

2) While I understand it won’t move things itself, I need to know if I need to move things over? Or will it just start using those new locations for new things that written moving forward?

3) Lastly, where can I specify the metadata location? I can’t seem to find it. I did chose to write NFO and images into the folder locations. Is there anything else or is that the only setting? I cannot find a place to specify a location like on Cache, Transcode, etc.

Thanks so much!

If it won't save then it means the server doesn't have write access to that location. Have you checked on this?

2) I believe everything will get cached again.

3)The setting is in Dashboard-Library-Advance tab.  All people images will reside in /metadata and chapter images and bif files dependant on library setup option.

I'm afraid, not from the top of my head.

I never moved those folders, but I think that after connecting an external drive, Android creates some folders on the drive including something like "Shared Storage" and somewhere below there's the area where the app is allowed to write to.

There are other ways and thousands of articles about it, but I'd need to start from scratch like all of us.
