jmassaro87 28
Using a new setup all the way around. HTPC died, so i am now using Synology DS418play, and switched to an AppleTV 4k (Disney+ not available on our tv). We started a movie for my son the other day and it stuttered horribly. looked at the server to see it was transcoding, slowly. here is the transcode log from the server, why might this not be direct playing? i will try another title when i have a chance. Luke 37007
Hi there, did you explore the server dashboard to learn why it was transcoding?

vdatanet 1549
Try without subtitles. I think PGS subtitles require transcode. Is that true @@Luke? Edited December 4, 2019 by vdatanet

Just played the same file on my computer. "Subtitle format not supported" turned off subtitles on the video, and now it's direct streaming. Never knew there were subs on this video or why we would even need them. Edited December 4, 2019 by jmassaro87

Direct streaming is normal for this video because you are playing a dts audio track.

The transcode reason in the Dashboard is sometimes confusing, the truth is in the log.

vdatanet 1549
No, not with the mpv player. Stream mapping: Stream #0:0 (h264) -> overlay:main (graph 0) Stream #0:2 (pgssub) -> scale (graph 0) hwupload (graph 0) -> Stream #0:0 (h264_vaapi) Stream #0:1 -> #0:1 (dts (dca) -> ac3 (native)) I think PGS subtitles require video transcoding when remuxing. If you can direct play audio and video then there's no video transcoding using PGS subtitles. If audio needs to be transcoded (HLS streaming) and you use subtitles (any type in my case), video needs to be transcoded. Luke 37007
I think PGS subtitles require video transcoding when remuxing. Well yes that's true. PGS won't a remux all by itself, but if a remux is already taking place then it will have to be a full transcode.
