Today I was at a house that has a Shield, so I tried casting to it. It connected just fine, showed the info page just fine, but anything I tried playing had problems. Some wouldn't play at all, others would freeze. The internet bandwidth was low, so I blamed that. Now that I'm home, I tried the same thing. I get the same results. Only a few movies that I tried, have played. Most won't. The movies have varying containers, varying audio and video codecs. I'm attaching the remux log for the last attempt. This just froze at the first frame.

So you were casting to the Shield as a Chromecast device, as opposed to our Android TV app?

Correct.

Try lowering the Chromecast quality setting in the casting app.

I just took a quick look at my logs for yesterday. Two of the movies that I remember playing correctly, were fully transcoded. All the others were remuxed. Which raises another question. Why would a generically encoded video (mp4, AAC, h264) need to be remuxed to play? Should that not be direct played?

Did you explore your server dashboard to learn why it was transcoding?

That's not the point. Very little will play at all. Nothing will direct play and most things are being remuxed and won't play.

Testing this further, they will play from the beginning, but if you skip forward or use chapters, it freezes playing. No, it isn't that you need to wait for it to create a buffer, they completely freeze and the playback time continues as though it is playing. You have to press stop to exit out. Some will work ok, but a lot won't.

Does chromecast not support AAC?

aac-audiochannels=2&TranscodeReasons=AudioChannelsNotSupported

And if it doesn't, why is the server transcoding the audio to AAC?

19:52:32.054 Stream mapping:
19:52:32.054   Stream #0:0 -> #0:0 (copy)
19:52:32.054   Stream #0:1 -> #0:1 (aac (native) -> aac (native))

Oh I see, it's the channel count. It doesn't like 5.1 AAC. Ok, so the problem is the server remux. Chromcast doesn't seem to like seeking through it.

So is this a Chromecast or emby issue? And while I'm here, how do you disable cinema mode for Chromecast? It's disabled in the app, but always plays with Chromecast.

You're asking about the seeking?

I'm asking about this issue in general. Have you reproduced it?

Not yet. I would imagine it is content specific.

I'll have to test more and see if I can determine a common denominator.

Yes, no change. The quick test I just did was to play a movie from the beginning, it played. Then choose a chapter while playing....it skipped to the chapter but doesn't play. It just freezes. Then tried playing directly by chapter, same as before, it freezes. Some movies won't even play from the beginning. Look in the log around 11:07pm, the movie is 3 Days to Kill.
