Video stutters and pauses while audio continues

This has been happening for a month or two now, I kept hoping an update or new patch will resolve this. I'm seeing other similar issues in this forum but I don't know if it's the same cause.

Media that's really old in my unRAID box, like Curb Your Enthusiasm is experiencing it, new current stuff like For All Mankind is also experiencing it when the previous episodes played fine.

My current Emby/Kodi set up is becoming almost unusable because of the randomness of this issue.

Here's a log following instructions from here.

In Emby Add-on's Sync setting,I have tried Native and Add-on playback. In the Playback setting, I've tried enabling and disabling all the options such as Enable simply play, and all the transcoding options.

I just don't know what could be causing this and don't know where to even begin troubleshooting because I'm fairly sure this started with some recent updates.

More than happy to provide more information if someone can take a look and let me know what else is needed.

Hi there, are you running the latest Emby for Kodi version?

I believe so, I just went into Settings for the Emby for Kodi addon to check for updates and it's telling me there is none.

When I clicked on Changelog, it's showing me 4.1.16.

Looking at "Add-ons/Recently updated" in Kodi, I can see Emby was last updated on 11/21/2019. Clicking on that shows me 4.1.16 by angelblue05, sualfred.

When I click on Update, I see the same 4.1.16 version from Kodi Emby Addons and Kodi Emby Beta Addons.

So I'm guessing I'm running the latest.

Hi @@Luke,

I restarted my Mi Box this time, (after restarting Kodi and Emby separately a few times previously) and the video file is playing fine for now.

Here's a new log for the current state: http://paste.kodi.tv/azapiwonip

Do both logs exhibit discrepancies that help pinpoint what's causing the video lag?

I don't see anything obvious, but it might depend on the level of activity happening on your server. Can you attach the emby server log as well? thanks.

Hi @@Luke, I've attached the log with this post, it's a whopping 4MB.

This would likely not be related to Emby for Kodi if it happened with native playback like OP says, which is pure Kodi playback handling via smb and it loading the file. In second log which shows it is using direct stream which leaves the file unmodified played via your server to Kodi. I doubt it has to do with Emby, again because of your OP.

You most likely need to adjust the caching on your device. This is spammed during playback in your first kodi log.

Don't know if it'll make a difference, but worth trying.

Create the advancedsettings.xml file in the proper location (check link) and add this. Play around with the values to see if you can get it to make a difference. Restart Kodi to apply changes.

Hi @@Angelblue05, thanks you for your suggestion.

I had a look at the link you provided and it looks like some tag names were changed from v17. I'd like to confirm with you, according to the current nomenclature, it looks like the file content should be this?:

<advancedsettings>
  <cache>
    <!--- The three settings will go in this space, between the two cache tags. --->
    <buffermode>1</buffermode>
    <readfactor>1.5</readfactor>

Did you try Angelblue's suggestion with the buffer? I think that helped me, I've noticed way less pausing since, almost none actually.
