Problems with new player interface

Recommended Posts

Glad there is an option to turn this really nice looking feature off @@ebr ..after one nights use man i had to come here to find out how to get rid & it's not ready for rollout imo ..crashed the normally faultless MBC player twice. (mb3 is unable to continue error)

The picture & slider rarely came up as shown above and after a video had finished the player (MBC) locked up twice with no option to close other than task manager. Also when the shiny new slider appeared it was as terribly slow to react to any movement. The ordinary working mbc player allowed use of the back button as a quick option to change episode/movie too this new one didn't work at all either. Once again glad there is an option to disable!

While it looked great, Kudos for that   ;) .. it behaved like a pig

You are the first one to report such an experience - but that's why I put it out to Beta so it would gain a wider audience to discover issues.

Can you please try using the new interface with the Chocolate theme to see if these issues are theme related?

Hi Ebr, please take this constructively but I have to agree with the OP (I use Chocolate). I think my biggest challenge with the new interface is the controls of the chapter skipping and such. It just feels unitiuitive and I find myself having it skip around when I don't want it to (or at least skip in the navigation bar I mean but I don't press enter).

If there was any way to just enable the nice graphics with an option to enable/disable the new navigation capabilities, I'd vote for that. Don't take it the wrong way, as I have specific issues as well since I'm a heavy user of mediacontrol, and definitely appreciate all your work but just wanted to give feedback.

If you use media control, how is the new navigation capability slowing you down?  You can still use the media control ff/rew functionality and just ignore the chapter skipping capability.

Or, does media control also provide true chapter skips?

Also, you said you "agree" with psmc but he complained about performance issues, not usability/navigation.  Did you also experience the performance issues he did?

The "performance" issues I see likely are more related to me fumbling around when  using the chapter skip and such not necessarily the same as the OP.

I have gotten some WMC crashes when I have the new player enabled and disabling the functions that conflict with Mediacontrol, but when using ff/rew with Mediacontrol it seems to crash intermittently (doesn't crash when player disabled). It was eshell crashing in the message.

The main issues are the crashing (see my other post) and also the player taking focus initially when the mediacontrol pop up appears and there is no way to navigate back to the mediacontrol pop up menu via a remote (need to use a mouse)

So you are not seeing slow performance of the UI like the OP.  I just want to be very clear so I know where to look for issues.

Users of Media Control very well may be better off disabling this interface as that program tries to hook into WMC/the current interface at a low level so it wouldn't surprise me if there are conflicts.  We discovered one (the FF/Rew buttons) during alpha but the whole thing just may not be very compatible.

That is surprising as this method should be much quicker and easier than actually skipping around in the video.

The new interface allows you to skip along a the timeline without jumping the video all over the place and even shows you a preview of the chapter you have selected before you go there.

It works much more like a BD live menu now than the random skipping through the actual video that usually happens.

Ok just tested build 180 and no I don't see any slowdown. I'm pretty certain it was just my unfamiliarity with the new interface. I still get crashes ff/rew even when enabling the mediacontrol conflict option, but like you said there may not be much that can be done about that.

Can you define "crashes"?  Are there error messages generated?  A Windows Event Log error?  An MBC log?

Windows event log (ffmpeg is the dll crashing):

Faulting application name: ehshell.exe, version: 6.1.7600.16385, time stamp: 0x4a5bd053
Faulting module name: ffmpeg.dll, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4edbd6f8
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x00000000001ca886
Faulting process id: 0x%9
Faulting application start time: 0x%10
Faulting application path: %11
Faulting module path: %12
Report Id: %13

I use ffdshow configured to use the Intel Quicksync decoder for h.264 file types. I don't get these crashes with the old player enabled.

Well, then it probably has something to do with the fact that, with the new interface, we aren't running in full screen exclusive mode and media control/ffmpeg may be depending on that or just depending on a certain speed that is achieved by that.

If you have the option enabled to disable FF/Rew then I'm not doing anything with those key presses.  Media Control is doing whatever it normally would.  It just doesn't like that we're not in full screen I guess.

I experience when you wanna play a dvd with menu you can't start the movie and you also not can select subs. Layout is nice but i had to switch off because of the controls for subs and navigate thru the dvd menu

Oh, that's right - I totally forgot about that.  DVD menus won't work with the new interface.  I was hoping we would get some information from the server to tell us whether or not there was a menu in a video_ts rip so I could disable it in that instance.  Instead, I may just have to disable for all DVD rips.

I like it ebr, works well with square but I've had to switch it off because it'll probably make my wife's head explode!

It's different. She has difficulty with anything that's different!!

I can just imagine her pressing skip but not enter, endlessly no matter how many times I tell her...

Does she know how to use the scene selection menu on a DVD or BluRay..?  Pretty much the same thing.

Everyone hates change.  Even changes for the better.

I would have to test again, but the only slowness (and again it may more be due to my unfamiliarity with it) was using the skip forward/back features of the new player (separate from the mediacontrol issues). I can't recall if it was just the interface or there was actual slowness.

I have not had any crashes and it works perfect to me. If you are not using media control it is impossible to select scenes in an mkv video.

Doh! Most of my media is DVD rips with no menus though, movies and individual eps. I am thinking of converting all to mkv however.

Yeah, this is the problem.  I think probably most people who did DVD rips probably stripped the menus.

So, I will probably make this an option to not use the player for DVD rips so that people who's rips don't contain menus can still use it.  Hopefully, in the future we can discover which actual items have menus vs. don't and automatically use or not use the new interface.

You mean without this new enhancement, or you are having a problem selecting chapters in MKVs with the new interface...?
