Connection problem on WiFi

Problem summary: WiFi devices on my local network can't connect to Emby server using local IP after changing to new router.

Setup: Emby server running on Windows 10, 10Gbit ethernet to router

Router: Sagemcom (Comhem WiFi Hub C2)

Client1: Laptop Windows 10, Firefox browser. WiFi 5Ghz OR eth 10Gbit.

Client2: Android mobile phone w Emby app. WiFi 5 Ghz.

Problem started with the new router from my ISP Comhem. I duplicated all settings from the old router, i.e firewall, port fwd. Disabling FW in router AND in Windows makes no difference.

Laptop on WiFi

  • <server local IP>:<embyport> fails connection to server!
  • <domain name:<embyport> connects through my external IP. See attached file 1! Server alias IP = THOMAS. Laptop IP = <my external IP>. Note 1

Laptop on ethernet (WiFi disabled)

  • <server local IP>:<embyport> Connects succesfully through local IP. See attached file 2! Server alias IP = 192.168.0.5. Laptop IP = 192.168.0.98.

Mobile Phone

  • <server local IP>:<embyport> fails connection to server!
  • <domain name:<embyport> connects through my external IP. Note 1,2

Note 1: Works (kind of...) The drawback is that Emby treats this as an external connection although both server and client are on the same local network!

Note 2: After clearing all data for the Emby app, the Emby servername is displayed in the Select Server pane. Tested changing the Emby servername to verify that it wasn't cached in phone. Still connection fails!

The main question is why/how the router differenciates between devices on WiFi and ethernet?

Is wifi isolation accidentally enabled in the router? Treating the wireless connections as "guests"?

There is no such setting in the router! Having read up on what wireless isolation is, I am positive that it's NOT enabled.

Can the wifi connected devices ping every other device on your network?

Yes, although win 10 requires you to disable the firewall to allow ping, but I've done that.

Sent a mail to my ISP support today in which I described my problem. Told them that if they can't come up with a solution I will go back to my old modem/router which was totally good for me!

I've also googled a lot without success. Sagemcom has no support to end customers since their products are apparently only distributed through ISPs. Didn't even find a real manual for the bloody thing!

Disable firewall for ping? I don't think I've ever had to do that. Is your network defined as Public instead of Private in Windows?

Sagemcom is crap for support, I totally agree.

Well, it surprised me at first that my win10 machines didn't respont to ping, but after a quick google I learned that the win 10 fw blocks ping per default! My network is Private.

Anyway, disabling the win fw didn't make any difference regarding the emby connection problem I'm having.

I realize now that this problem has nothing to do with Emby but rather my router! However I will very much appreciate any idea that helps solving the problem!

I got an answer from my ISP support and as expected they didn't read and understand my problem
I got a "How to forward ports 4 dummies" answer. Of course I gave them a "proper" answer! Let's see if they will elevate this to a real technician?
