3.0.191 regression?

Hi there,

I've received the 3.0.191 update on my Roku device and there appears to be some regression compared to the previous release.

1. Home screen background is black and there is no contrast between the cards and backgrounds. This means some cards simply show an icon on black background or when there is no icon simply white text on black background.

2. Scrolling through the TV Guide / EPG when watching live TV causes a black screen to flicker and spinner to appear when it loads the next group of epg listings. eg select TV Guide / EPG while watching live tv, EPG for channels 1-3 appear, then scroll to show channel 4-6 and you get a black flicker that was not present in the previous release.

3. Label showing "Channel (x-y") at bottom of the EPG is slightly cut out of frame.

4. It would be nice to restore the previous behavior of the remote down button when watching Live TV which highlighted the TV Guide/EPG button by default vs now highlighting the pause button. I would assume the TV Guide/EPG button would be the most common selection in this scenario.

Thanks.

I would say this is one of those: BUG or FEATURE? You "decide" which it is threads.

1. We had complaints that the background was not entirely flat black. Space black. The deepest black. We also had complaints that the background on the cards was causing the image on the canvas to distort. This is because when we store an image we can store it with a canvas background or a transparent one. With a canvas background the image will scale with the canvas making things distort. With a transparent canvas this will scale only the image. This does not distort.  We can possibly add a background rectangle underneath the default placeholders so they appear not to "melt into" the background. In this way the cards would stand out. But this would not be the same as a canvas under the image. It would look the same for all intents and purposes, but without the distortion problem and without texture memory being consumed. I assume this is what you mean for this part. We can possibly do better. This isn't needed for the tracker. We are always aware this is an issue. Believe me.

2. We recently added the loading spinner to the Live TV guide to give visual progress to users that the screen was updating. It would redraw directly over a blank green TV template otherwise and you would see the draw in. We thought that looked clumsy so we bring up a loading spinner over the top of the guide until the draw in is complete. In this way you don't see us literally drawing in the screen and erasing the last. It should not be making a black flicker. If that is happen something is not happening correctly. Thanks for bringing this up I will add it to our issue tracker and investigate where that flicker comes from.

3. Thanks again. That is not supposed to be cut off. It has to be near the bottom as that is valuable real estate on the guide. Superfluous information such as channels showing needs to be placed in an out-of-sight-line spot. The bottom was chosen and we might be going too low. I can see about raise those labels up a bit. This is also going on the issue tracker.

4. This is due to how the video player changed. There are now multiple action button groups and the navigation trails just have not been rebuilt to the old behaviors yet. Thanks again for bring this up this is also going onto the issue tracker.

Any other concerns? We love feedback good, bad and ugly. We will fix the above as well. You can use those ticket numbers above to discuss this further at any time. Thanks again for helping us get better. :)

Thanks for taking a positive approach to my feedback. It's much appreciated. I feel point 1 will be less of an issue once Emby for Roku supports themes. The Android, Samsung and LG clients look great. A consistent look and feel across all clients will help.

Thanks!

Diego

We already set the ground work for themes. Our icons are now colorable. Our shades are also colorable. Our backgrounds are colorable. Our labels, our focus indicators. Everything that was making it harder to theme I believe we have addressed. Now we are just waiting to clean up other areas that need attention to bring them in-line. Once we have basic consistency we can start to develop themes using the same templates as the other apps. That is coming soon. You will just have to pick your single theme and across all the apps it will be used. This is coming to Roku. All the ground work is completed. ;)

Before themes we had to have translations. Now that we have translations it does become obvious the Roku app lacks the "same look" as the other apps because of its lack of themes. It becomes painfully obvious that for consistency it have themes. We understand.

We will be using a new colored background canvas with default placeholder icons. The icons will no longer just float in the ether.

#1 will be resolved soon along with #2 and #3. We are presently working on #4. Thanks again. :)

Did something change with how 7.1 audio is treated with version 191?

The reason I ask is that any content with 7.1 audio that previously was being REMUXED to 5.1 on my current system while still allowing 4K and HDR video to direct stream properly is now not working. Any attempt to play 4K HDR content that has a 7.1 audio track is now attempting to transcode the video and audio and HDR  is not recognized. Only occurs on content with 7.1 audio. 4K HDR content with 5.1 audio DIRECT PLAYS as expected. I had one 4K HDR video with 2.0 commentary track and if I select that at startup HDR video is recognized and content is DIRECT PLAYED. Back out and select 7.1 audio and the video and audio are transcoded and HDR is lost.

This is only occurring with Roku EMBY. Prime Video content with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos (Jack Ryan) are playing as expected. Demo content with 4K Dolby Vision / HDR video and Atmos audio play as expected off of USB drive using the Roku Media Player.

So you are seeing the same this as reported here?

Yes. Just saw that post and added my comments there.

Exact same issue. Content with 7.1 audio that played just fine with audio being remuxed to 5.1 until a few days ago now triggers a full transcode of both video and audio and HDR is no longer recognized if present in the content. 4K HDR HEVC content with a 5.1 audio track will DIRECT PLAY. 7.1 audio seems to be triggering a different treatment from Emby than it did just a few days ago.

The remux/directstream issue should be solved. We are also in the process of correcting issues 1 through 3 in the OP's original post. Number 4 is in-progress after we finalize our HEVC detection changes in-progress. Thank you for bringing up the issues. If these continue to be a problem in the future please bring them up again. These changes will make it to Beta very shortly.

Any other issues please create separate threads for them. Combine too many issues into one thread will lead to confusion. It may also lead to your issue being overlooked. Thanks again. :)

Confirmed. BETA Build 192 has corrected previous issue with directstream/remux with 7.1 audio.

Thank you.
