Roku music playback issue

Recommended Posts

When trying to play music though my TCL-Roku TV I get a playback error showing " Malformed Data". This does not happen when I play the same song through the web interface or on my android phone. I am attaching log files  and will try and get the roku files.

User Name: Beav

EST of file send from roku: 2:43 PM 10/20/19

Attempting to play song: "I'm in love with my car" from Album Queen Night at the Opera.

Thanks, as always!

I just sent all of the log files I could find on the server. I turned on debugging on the roku and I assume that it sent an error report when the error happened, again.

Do I need to send you anything else?

The problem is going to be we need to roll through all the codecs again and develop fallback for the audio player as well. The codec support differs per Roku device slightly and we do read that support correctly. But recently some ALAC files no longer direct play that did before when packaged in M4A files. Roku still incorrectly has ALAC as supported when clearly no it isn't. If it is intended to be they need to fix it. Until such time as they do, we can redesign our audio player codec detection (universal endpoint) and support to know they are lying to us about ALAC and whatever else.

What extension are your files and which codec that produce the "Malformed data" message? Most audio codecs do not have real extensions/containers like mp3, flac but some do such as m4a. Knowing which you find play and which don't will help us. I can then compare to what I find and develop a plan. Playback issues are #1 priority and this is a playback issue. I will do some investigating tonight and see where I get and circle back here. We want to also eventually develop audio player fallback just as happens with video so this just naturally happens but right now there are some combinations of container/codec that cannot be played as audio. We do apologize. I will dig into this tonight. Thanks for bringing this up as it is an issue and I have files that can reproduce this.

Let us know which extensions/codecs your files are that do not play and we will compare notes and solve this. Thanks. :)

It's very weird. Most of my files are mp3 a very few are M4A. Here's the weird part I can play both types of files on the Roku tv without a problem. It's just certain files that get the error. Such as Queen's "I'm in love with my car" for example. But if I play that same file over the web app, in android, or just use groove music on my pc to play it directly the file will play. I 1st got the error the other night when I used the “instant mix” function. A couple of songs played then the error popped up. I exited out of the error and just opened an album and it played fine. Then this morning I tried to play "I'm in love with my car" for my wife ( she wasn’t getting the running joke in the movie Bohemian Rhapsody ) and I got the error again. I'm baffled.

Is there anywhere you need me to search in Roku settings that may help? I'm not sure how to find out what codex the Roku is running.

Is this one an mp3 or m4a?

UPDATE: < scratch what was here before >

We will have audio player fallback that can detect errors and then force transcoding of the audio when it cannot play something it should. This will alleviate the issue and is exactly how our video player works. This is in testing right now. This was faster to build than we anticipated. We will have this completed and in the next Beta. Please stay tuned.

This will be submitted today once we finish it. ^_~

You guys ROCK!!

Thanks. But you rock for bringing this up. Motivation.

This will also just involve pressing play. You will not have to do anything special to make this work. This is all 100% automatic. Lean back and enjoy. Your wife, very young children, elderly parents, etc will now enjoy this much more. I have played through 3,200 songs and all songs played. You do not notice the fallback happening it is so fast. This is incredibly quick and awesome now.

Hey there,

I just found Emby as an awesome replacement for Plex on my QNAP. Loving the whole thing so far.

However, I just ran into this same issue - some files, seems to be particularly my small set of m4a files - not playing back on the Roku app. I've installed the public Beta, but same issue.

I realize this was just fixed a few weeks ago, but I wanted to check if the fix you reference above has been implemented in an available app yet or if that'll be in an upcoming release. I couldn't find any release notes on any of the apps.

Thanks so much for an amazing system!!

Each app should have release notes pin in their forum section.  How up to date they are is another story.

Ah! Nice. I knew they’d be somewhere. Thanks. Looks like the referenced fix was back a couple releases. I’ll have to keep looking for the issue then.
