Recording custom TV Channels

Hi Everyone,

I’m coming for a WMC background and am wanting to move to a dedicated VM running Emby Premier with a HD Homerun Quadro for live tv, my plan is to use Nvidia Shields connected to TVs in multiple rooms to access Emby and Live TV.

As part of my current setup I’m utilising 2X HDMI RF modulators that convert 2X external devices with HDMI into TV Stations. In my example Foxtel (Cable Box) is channel 100 and a Roku 4 Box is channel 101. These are affectively custom channels. I use a 3rd part application on WMC called Bigscreen EPG to insert a dummy EPG guide onto these channels that consists of 2X 12 hours programs each day. This allows me to do a manual recording of any content on these stations which then is exported to MCEBuddy to run comskip and convert to MKV’s.

My problem is that when I use Live TV via Emby I cant record these stations and have no record button. I have been able to get around this with the HD homerun application with the below, not available in the GUI.

I’m assuming because there is no EPG on this channel and hence no start and stop times the record functionality is missing?

Is there a way to override this to allow recording of these custom channels?

Or is there a 3rd party plugin like perhaps NextPVR that would allow this functionality?

Thanks,

Damo

Example for recording custom channels on HD Homerun app

cd "%userprofile%\desktop"

"%programfiles%\Silicondust\HDHomeRun\hdhomerun_config" 1233958C set /tuner0/channel auto:613500000

"%programfiles%\Silicondust\HDHomeRun\hdhomerun_config" 1233958C set /tuner0/filter 0x0-0x1fff

"%programfiles%\Silicondust\HDHomeRun\hdhomerun_config" 1233958C save /tuner0 90696-613.ts

That is an interesting dilemma.

I think you are on the right track with your considering NextPVR - might be able to turn those to channels into streams and then you can create an M3U using that info.

Since you are coming from WMC are you by any chance familiar with epg123? You would need to have a Schedules Direct account to make this work - Epg123 (using XMLTV output option)

has for a couple of versions now been creating filler data for "Local", "Education" and "Governmental" type local cable channels, thus giving us Emby users the ability to record

those channels. You could then make those 2 channels look like any of those local type channels in the M3U and have epg123 generate the filler data for them. You can configure the

default length of the filler data time frame - I am using 4 hour blocks.

Make any sense?

Hi, currently you need guide data to record, but manual recordings are planned for the future. Thanks.

You could look into xteve if it is compatible with your set up as this allows the generation of dummy epg. Works well for me

But dummy epg wont have the start/stop times required for recording.

Better than not being able to record at all!! I just schedule all dummy programs covering the timeslot I'm interested in. They are 2 hour dummy programs so as I say, it works well for me. Alternative would be waiting waiting waiting until emby looks at this.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all your valuable input. I have looked at EPG123 in the past, unfortunately, schedules direct don’t seem to have EPG data for my region (Australia). They did add my region in 2016 as a Beta region but not much info since then. (http://forums.schedulesdirect.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=2824&p=9221&hilit=australia#p9221)

I will have a look at Next PVR and see how an automated solution can be pieced together. Xteve looks promising, I will do some testing and come back to you all.

Ultimately my solution needs to be “wife proof” which is why WMC worked so well with EMBY limited to providing movies and tv show content.

To the Admin, is there an ETA or roadmap on the manual recording feature?
