Problem with any interlaced content on Fire TV or any platform except the TV app

Hi

I am currently using Emby for TV recording and playback.  Most of the recordings in the UK are interlaced (with a few exceptions) and I am having trouble playing them back smoothly and sharply on any version of the Emby app apart from the one actually on my Samsung TV.  Here are the issues (I think)

  • The TS file that is recorded is not supported by the Fire TV (unsupported container) therefore some transcoding takes place.  This isn't smooth and appears to attempt the deinterlacing but is nothing like the smoothness of the TV and often drops frames or freezes despite changing the settings
  • The Fire TV doesn't output in 1080i, all it's resolutions to choose from are 'p' therefore , even if an interlaced video does 'direct play', it seems the Fire TV is deinterlacing (badly) and sending it to the TV as a progressive stream.
  • Any recordings that were progressive (some dramas on BBC and ITV for example) seem to play well
  • When you remux or reencode to an mp4 pr mkv, I can't see how to keep the 'interlaced' file successfully intact for the TV to do the deinterlacing
  • Apple TV 4K seems to have the same issues with no native 1080i output and whatever I throw at it it seems to want to do the deinterlacing (again, badly) before it sends the signal to the TV

It is fine in my main room as I can get the Emby app on the Samsung TV which is perfect, but my other room has a Hisense TV which doesn't have Emby in it's app store.  When I use Plex on this TV everything works as it should as it is the app directly on the TV.

I think my problem seems to be that all boxes I have (fire TV, Apple TV 4k) won't just pass through the 1080i signal without wanting to do something with it first.  Watching on the Samsung Emby App is just like watching live on Sky or any other platform - perfectly smooth and sharp.  Can anyone advise?

Thanks!
