jasonmcroy 315
Does anyone have experience using wireless HDMI? How reliable is it? I just bought a Home theater projector and have spent most of the night testing it out. I currently have an HDMI cable running across the floor from my theater receiver to the projector and using a temporary white sheet to test it all out. Totally crappy setup at the moment. However, despite that, I think it looks great to have a 100" screen in the living room right now. The picture is really awesome! My next steps are to decide how I am going to set it all up either permanently or easily able to pull it out when we have movie night. We otherwise will watch on the TV in our entertainment center. My future screen will be able to hang from the top of the entertainment center when being used. So, that brought me to the running of the HDMI cable. We rent so I don't want to do a lot of drilling if it isn't necessary. My landlord won't really mind, I just know I will have to fix any holes later. In my research I came across wireless HDMI receiver/transmitter and wanted to see if anyone here has any experience with them.

A friend of mine uses a wifi hdmi bridge without issues but it only supports 1080p. He was not able to find one compatible with 4K.
jasonmcroy 315
Thanks! No 4K needed, just 1080p. I am not sure I have seen a wifi HDMI bridge. I will look that up as well.

jasonmcroy 315
Ah, gotcha. I was just searching Google and couldn't find mention of wifi, so thanks for clarifying!
rbjtech 4223
Any thoughts do it the other way around - Hook a HDMI FireTV/Android 'Stick' into the projector and then just stream the audio to the AV Receiver - assuming your projector has Audio out? Much less bandwidth involved than video, so probably easier and cheaper this way ?
Senna 368
@@jasonmcroy No experience with wireless-HDMI, but for my 1080p projector setup, I have chosen for an optical HDMI cable (cable run was about 15m or approx 49ft). This optical HDMI cable is thin and flexible for easy routing, with specs like: 4K@60Hz, 4:4:4, HDR, Rec. 2020, 18Gbps, ARC, CEC. I bought this cable with my future 4K projector upgrade in mind, instead of going wireless. More info here in dutch (so use your own favorite translate site), but those type of optical HDMI cables are probably also available in the US. I did feel my last option is to run a long cable. I have an easy way to hide it along the floor next to a sliding glass door to the right of our Living Room (we have black out curtains installed that completely block all light as needed) because there is a large gap under the carpet edge that I already have speaker wires running to my back surround speakers. Easy space to hide wiring. I will check out this thin cable to see what we have over here. I would need to do close to a 50 foot run that way. You're not seeing any degradation or noticeable lag at that distance? This may be my best option.
jasonmcroy 315
So, to update this thread: I did go to Best Buy today to pick up a wireless HDMI setup. It actually works OK for regular viewing on non fast moving video. However, trying to watch an action movie with a lot of motion there is just too much lag and the signal can't seem to keep up for a smooth flow. This is with the receiver and transmitter about 10 feet from each other in direct line of sight. I decided to at least try it because I can always return it, which is what I will be doing. If anyone else has any input about running a long HDMI cable or other ideas I am willing to hear them. Thanks for the responses here!
Senna 368
You're not seeing any degradation or noticeable lag at that distance? No, they are certified to still operate at 4K@60Hz, 4:4:4, HDR, Rec. 2020, 18Gbps, ARC, CEC, when a cable length of 30m (approx. 98ft) is used. Try that with a NON-optical HDMI cable, I think they don't exist for that cable length, for those specs.
Swynol 375
ive used solstice in work. that streams 4k/25fps. you just need to install an app on the PC. also looked at screenbeam which again does 4k but uses windows+k. only used it for youtube videos. both not cheap at around £800-£1000 a piece Edited September 11, 2019 by Swynol

I tried one more time today with the one I purchased a couple of days ago and placed them in different spots but I still get the same "choppiness" when I try to watch a Movie via Emby. Watching a TV show seems fine for some reason and streaming from Amazon Prime seems fine as well, although I haven't tried an action movie on that one yet. I would prefer to just stick with a cable, even though it's a bit more of a challenge to hide it. I will probably take more time this weekend to play around a bit more with the options. Significantly cheaper than the HDMI extender ! https://www.amazon.co.uk/Converter-Extractor-Optical-Toslink-Support/dp/B073TXX3KV/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_107_t_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=N6TCWXVYZJ0Q4V12GX9Z Assuming DTS/AC3 5.1 is good enough, then you could easily run that via a thin fibre to your AV Amp - saving the need to transmit anything over the air...
